Ayatollah Makarem: Relations with non-Muslims require mutual respect

Ayatollah Makarem Shirazi, speaking to the charge d’affaires of Iran in London, spoke about the importance of maintaining relations with other non-Muslim people and countries.

He stated: “We separate non-Muslims into a few categories and we have rulings in accordance with each of these groups. The first group we call mustamin; a non-Muslim who has been granted permission of entry by us and requested conduct of peace so that they can live (temporarily or permanently) in an Islamic country. For example, someone that gets a visa from us and is able to travel with it, is a part of this group.”

Criticizing the treatment of pilgrims traveling for Haj, his eminence said: “Apart from the fact that these pilgrims are guests of the Merciful, they are apparently supposed to be the guests of the Saudi Arabian government because they have entered via an official visa of that country, therefore, they should not be harassed. “

Explaining the duties towards foreign embassies in the country, the Ayatollah explained: “These people are under our security and till the diplomatic relations exists, there should be no problems for them.”

“The Quran speaks of not harassing this group and it goes further and asks good to be done upon them.”

Ayatollah Makarem Shirazi finished this segment of his meeting by mentioning some key points in having relations with others. He concluded: “Relations with them must be based upon mutual respect and complete caution and accordingly we must not let our relations with them to be threatened easily. This is because cutting relations with those countries leads to a lot of harm for Iranians and Muslims living in those places, and they are the ones that have to face problems.”
