Ayatollah Makarem responds to Erdogan

Ayatollah Makarem Shirazi, at the end of his advanced studies (bahth kharij) class on Tuesday, spoke about the recent comments made by the premier of Turkey regarding the Shia. He stated: “Recently, the prime minister of Turkey has said that the Shia are liars and they practice religious dissimulation (taqiyya). We must ask him who have the Shia lied too?”

He continued: “Some people from Al-Azhar have also said things similar and have criticized the Shia by saying that they perform religious dissimulation.”

His eminence explained that such statements are founded upon ignorance. He said: “Without knowing anything about the beliefs of the Shia they pass judgement upon them. They pass judgement on intercession, shafa’at and visiting the grave without knowing the nature of these practices. They should ask about the beliefs of the Shia from the Shia themselves and not their enemies.”

“The Prime Minister of Turkey has spoken without any basis; it is embarrassing to have a premier of a state speak about something of which he has no knowledge.”

Ayatollah Makarem Shirazi went on to congratulate the Iranian nation on the start of the New Year.

“We are hopeful that the New Year will be one of unity between the Muslims.”

He continued: “Hopefully in the New Year, we can work hand in hand in helping solve the economic problems of this nation. At the moment there is a lot of pressure on the disadvantaged segments of the society and we must not forget about them.”

Continuing his advice for the upcoming year, his eminence spoke about the responsibilities of the state and the people. He advised: “They must focus on the disadvantaged and remote areas as well to see what difficulties they face in their lives. If we wish God to turn his blessings towards us, both the government and the people must think about the people who are deprived.”

Ayatollah Makarem Shirazi ended the session with a prayer to help those that are weak and for the progress of the Islamic nation. He stated: “We must all pray, with all our existence, for the solutions of these problems. We must ask God to help us maintain our ethics and to solve our cultural and economic problems.”

He concluded: “We are hopeful that by the intercession of Lady Zahra (s), the coming year will be better in terms of religion, ethics, economics and politics than previous years.”
