{"id":11600,"date":"2017-11-16T13:09:39","date_gmt":"2017-11-16T13:09:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wilayah.info\/en\/?p=11600"},"modified":"2017-11-16T13:09:39","modified_gmt":"2017-11-16T13:09:39","slug":"hariris-prolonged-stay-in-saudi-arabia-mysterious-lebanon-fm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wilayah.info\/en\/hariris-prolonged-stay-in-saudi-arabia-mysterious-lebanon-fm\/","title":{"rendered":"Hariri\u2019s prolonged stay in Saudi Arabia mysterious: Lebanon FM"},"content":{"rendered":"<blockquote><p><strong>Lebanese Foreign Minister Gebran Bassil has questioned Prime Minister Saad Hariri\u2019s prolonged stay in Saudi Arabia, calling it \u201cmysterious\u201d as the country is teetering on the brink of a political crisis following the premier\u2019s abrupt resignation.<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cIt is the first time in the history of the republic that an official announces his resignation from abroad,\u201d Bassil told Egyptian Arabic-language al-Ahram daily newspaper on Wednesday, stressing that\u00a0Hariri\u2019s return to Lebanon has now become a \u201cnational priority\u201d.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Bassil said Lebanon had launched a campaign to explain \u201cthe circumstances of Hariri\u2019s resignation from abroad within the context of current events,\u201d and also to highlight\u00a0\u201cthe need to respect the international agreements and conventions that regulate political relations between states and ensure total immunity for sovereign state officials.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bassil&#8217;s remarks came after Lebanese President Michel Aoun said earlier on Wednesday that Saudi officials had\u00a0detained Hariri, calling it an act of aggression against Lebanon.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cNothing justifies Hariri&#8217;s lack of return for 12 days. We therefore consider him detained. This is a violation of the Vienna agreements and human rights law,\u201d Aoun said at a meeting with Lebanese journalists and media executives.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<figure class=\"image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/217.218.67.233\/\/photo\/20171115\/7720cafe-1a7f-4432-a2ef-91faf4b6c62a.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"555\" height=\"313\" \/><figcaption>Lebanon&#8217;s President Michel Aoun\u00a0(Photo by AFP)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Lebanese president further noted that Saudi Arabia was holding Hariri\u2019s family as well, saying,\u00a0\u201cWe have not previously asked for their return, but we have confirmed that (his family) is also detained and family members are being searched as they enter and leave the house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>French foreign minister to meet Hariri in Riyadh<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, an unnamed French diplomatic source said French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian was to meet with the Lebanese prime minister during a visit to Saudi Arabia.<\/p>\n<p>Le Drian is to arrive\u00a0in Riyadh later on Wednesday\u00a0to discuss political developments regarding Lebanon with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, and hold talks with Hariri in person.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/217.218.67.233\/\/photo\/20171115\/3b2b4285-3eb8-40c3-bae0-3c55b5060cf7.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"555\" height=\"313\" \/><figcaption>French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian (Photo by AFP)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The source added that the meeting was scheduled for Thursday, but the timing could still change.<\/p>\n<p>Hariri announced his resignation in a televised statement on November 4, citing many reasons, including the security situation in Lebanon, for his sudden decision.
