Instead of taking \u201cbiased\u201d stances that endanger peace and stability in the Middle East, France and other Western nations need to adopt a \u201crealistic\u201d approach that helps soothe tensions in the region, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Qassemi says.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cUnfortunately, it seems like France has a one-sided and biased view towards the ongoing crises and humanitarian catastrophes in the Middle East,\u201d Qasemi said on\u00a0Thursday.<\/p>\n

And this view fuels regional conflicts, “whether intentionally or unintentionally,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

The remarks were a direct reaction to French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian, who earlier in the day expressed concern about what he called Iran\u2019s \u201chegemonic\u201d intentions in the Middle East.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m thinking specifically about Iran\u2019s ballistic program,\u201d Le Drian said during a joint press conference with his Saudi counterpart Adel al-Jubeir during a trip to Saudi Arabia.<\/p>\n

Emphasizing the need for stability and security in the region, Qassemi advised leaders of France and other nations to adopt a \u201crealistic and responsible\u201d approach.<\/p>\n

The Iranian official also condemned weapons sales by \u201ctrans-regional countries\u201d to Middle Eastern government, saying the deals have only led to \u201cmore instability and insecurity\u201d in the region.<\/p>\n

Iran says it has played an influential role in the region in battling foreign-sponsored Takfiri terrorists, whose crimes are known to the West, particularly France.<\/a><\/div>\n

Citing Saudi Arabia\u2019s ongoing military aggression against Yemen as an example, Qassemi said the unconditional support had made the Riyadh regime and its regional partners more \u201cinsolent\u201d in creating new conflicts.<\/p>\n

According to the Control Arms Coalition, France, the world\u2019s fourth weapons exporter, authorized arms licenses worth $18 billion to Saudi Arabia in 2015 — the year Riyadh launched its military campaign against Yemen — followed by the United States at $5.9 billion and Britain\u2019s $4 billion.<\/p>\n

Le Drian\u2019s visit was an extension of Paris\u2019 role as a self-proclaimed mediator between Saudi Arabia and Lebanon, which have come to blows ever since Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri\u2019s strange resignation during a televised speech from Riyadh earlier this month.<\/p>\n
