Iran has strongly condemned US President Donald Trump\u2019s decision to move his country\u2019s embassy in Israel to Jerusalem al-Quds, saying the measure will ignite a new Palestinian Intifada (uprising).<\/p>\n

In a Wednesday night statement, the Iranian Foreign Ministry said Washington\u2019s recognition of Jerusalem al-Quds as Israel\u2019s capital is a \u201cblatant violation of international resolutions.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Islamic Republic of Iran has always stressed that the most important reason behind instability and insecurity in the Middle East is [Israel\u2019s] continued occupation, the US\u2019 relentless support for the Zionist regime, and denying the oppressed Palestinian nation the right to establish an independent state with al-Quds as it capital,\u201d the statement said.<\/p>\n

Describing the US move as \u201cprovocative and unwise,\u201d the Iranian Foreign Ministry warned that \u201crecognizing al-Quds as the Israeli regime\u2019s capital\u201d will \u201cprovoke Muslims and inflame a new Intifada and intensify extremism and violent behavior\u00a0for which the US and the Israeli regime will be responsible.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The statement also called on the international community to pressure the US\u00a0not to go through with the embassy move or the recognition of Jerusalem al-Quds as the Israeli regime’s\u00a0capital.<\/p>\n

The statement was issued shortly after Trump\u00a0officially declared the disputed city of Jerusalem al-Quds as Israel’s capital, despite warnings from around the world that the measure risks triggering a fresh wave of violence in the Middle East.<\/p>\n

In a speech at the White House earlier in the day, Trump said his administration would also begin a years-long process of moving the American embassy in Tel Aviv to the holy city.<\/p>\n

The announcement was a major shift by Washington that overturns decades of US foreign policy.<\/p>\n

In a televised speech after Trump’s announcement, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said\u00a0Jerusalem al-Quds is\u00a0the “eternal capital of the State of Palestine.”<\/p>\n

Abbas added that the US president’s speech was\u00a0“tantamount to the United States abdicating its role as a peace mediator.”<\/p>\n

“In addition, these measures are considered a reward to Israel for denying the accords and challenging the international law,” the Palestinian president stated, adding that\u00a0the US\u00a0“encourages the occupation policy, settlements, apartheid and ethnic cleansing.”<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Palestinians in the besieged Gaza Strip staged a demonstration against the US and Israel, condemning Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem al-Quds as Israel’s capital.<\/p>\n
