{"id":12412,"date":"2017-12-07T18:29:37","date_gmt":"2017-12-07T18:29:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wilayah.info\/en\/?p=12412"},"modified":"2017-12-07T18:29:37","modified_gmt":"2017-12-07T18:29:37","slug":"un-to-meet-on-trumps-quds-move-as-global-reactions-pour-in","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wilayah.info\/en\/un-to-meet-on-trumps-quds-move-as-global-reactions-pour-in\/","title":{"rendered":"UN to meet on Trump\u2019s Quds move as global reactions pour in"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"item-text\">\n<p>The UN Security Council is set to hold an emergency meeting on the recognition by the US of Jerusalem al-Quds as the \u201ccapital\u201d of Israel as world leaders and political figures continue to censure Washington\u2019s highly contentious move.<\/p>\n<p>Diplomats said the session will be held on Friday at the request of eight member states of the 15-member council, including France, Bolivia, Egypt, Italy, Senegal, Sweden, Britain and Uruguay.<\/p>\n<p>The eight have also asked UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres to officially open the meeting.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThe UN has given Jerusalem [al-Quds] a special legal and political status, which the Security Council has called upon the international community to respect. That is why we believe the Council needs to address this issue with urgency,\u201d Deputy Swedish UN Ambassador Carl Skau said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Bolivian Ambassador Sacha Sergio Llorenty Soliz called US President Donald Trump\u2019s move \u201ca reckless and a dangerous decision which violates international law and the resolutions of the Security Council.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Trump on Wednesday defied global warnings and said the US formally recognizes Jerusalem al-Quds as the \u201ccapital\u201d of Israel, and will begin the process of moving its embassy to the occupied city, breaking with decades of American policy.<\/p>\n<p>The announcement has triggered a chorus of condemnations from around the world.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Muslim nations boil with rage<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Iraqi government on Thursday slammed Trump\u2019s announcement and called on Washington to backtrack on the move.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThe US administration has to backtrack on this decision to stop any dangerous escalation that would fuel extremism and create conditions favorable to terrorism,\u201d a government statement said on Thursday.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan also said that Trump\u2019s decision completely disregarded a 1980 United Nations resolution regarding the status of the city, adding that move would throw the region into a \u201cring of fire.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/217.218.67.233\/\/photo\/20171207\/aa8ad16b-27bf-45c1-b2e2-ad6d981ed387.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"555\" height=\"313\" \/><figcaption>A Palestinian refugee family watches a televised broadcast of US President Donald Trump delivering an address at a Palestinian refugee camp, near Amman, Jordan December 6, 2017. (Photo by Reuters)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Meanwhile, Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak called on the Islamic world to strongly oppose any recognition of Jerusalem al-Quds as Israel\u2019s \u201ccapital.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI call on all Muslims across the world to let your voices be heard, make it clear that we strongly oppose any recognition of Jerusalem [al-Quds] as Israel&#8217;s capital for all time,\u201d Najib said in his speech at an annual gathering of the ruling party in the capital Kuala Lumpur on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Malaysia\u2019s Foreign Ministry also issued a statement and expressed concerns over Trump\u2019s move, calling on Washington to reconsider its decision.<\/p>\n<p>The statement said that Trump\u2019s announcement would put an end to all efforts towards the resolution of the Palestinian issue.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt would have grave repercussions not only towards the security and stability of the region, but would inflame sentiments, making efforts to combat terrorism all the more difficult,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n<p>It warned that any attempts to recognize Jerusalem al-Quds as the \u201ccapital\u201d of Israel or establish any diplomatic mission in the city are viewed as aggression towards the Arab and Islamic world.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is also an infringement on the Palestinian people\u2019s national rights, including their right to self-determination, and a grave breach of international law along with the Security Council\u2019s relevant resolutions,\u201d the statement added.<\/p>\n<div noreferrer\">Iran has strongly condemned US President Donald Trump\u2019s decision to move his country\u2019s embassy in Israel to Jerusalem al-Quds, saying the measure will ignite a new Palestinian Intifada.<\/a><\/div>\n<p>The ministry requested United Nations member states not to recognize any changes in the pre-1976 borders, including in connection with Jerusalem al-Quds, adding that Washington\u2019s move \u201cis an expression of support for Israeli policies, much of which is in contravention of the international law.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, Egypt\u2019s Foreign Ministry rejected the US decision to move its embassy to Jerusalem al-Quds.<\/p>\n<p>Sheikh Ahmed al-Tayeb, Imam of Egypt\u2019s al-Azhar mosque, one of Islam\u2019s most important institutions, said Washington\u2019s move \u201cincites feelings of anger among all Muslims and threatens world peace.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He warned against the ramifications, saying \u201cthe gates of hell will be opened in the West before the East.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In Lebanon, President Michel Aoun said on Wednesday that Trump\u2019s \u201cdangerous\u201d decision casts doubt on the US\u2019s credibility as a mediator in the peace process in the region.<\/p>\n<p>Morocco also summoned the US charge d\u2019affaires to express its deep concern over Trump\u2019s move.<\/p>\n<p>Tunisia\u2019s Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Wednesday that Trump\u2019s move \u201cseriously threatens to undermine the foundations of the (Israeli-Palestinian) peace process.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tunisia\u2019s powerful labor union UGTT also said in a separate statement that Trump\u2019s move is a declaration of war, calling for mass protests.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Qatar\u2019s Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani called the US president\u2019s announcement \u201ca dangerous escalation,\u201d saying it was a death sentence for all who seek peace.<\/p>\n<div noreferrer\">Thousands of protesters take to the streets in several countries to voice their anger at the recognition by the US of Jerusalem al-Quds as the \u201ccapital\u201d of Israel.\u00a0<\/a><\/div>\n<p>The United Arab Emirates (UAE)\u2019s Foreign Ministry also joined the chorus of condemnations.<\/p>\n<p>In a Thursday statement the ministry \u201cexpressed deep concern over the repercussions of this decision on the region\u2019s stability as it inflames the emotions of the Arab and Muslim people due to the status of Jerusalem [al-Quds] in the conscience of Arabs and Muslims.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>EU against Trump\u2019s move<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The European Union foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini on Wednesday expressed \u201cserious concern\u201d over Trump\u2019s move, saying it could have \u201crepercussions\u201d for the prospect of peace in the Middle East.<\/p>\n<p>Mogherini said the EU and its member states would continue to respect the international consensus on the location of their diplomatic representations in Israel until the final status of Jerusalem al-Quds\u00a0was resolved.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe EU calls on all actors on the ground and in the wider region to show calm and restraint in order to prevent any escalation. The focus should remain on creating conditions for direct and meaningful negotiations that can resolve all final status issues,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>She highlighted the necessity of the so-called two-state solution as \u201cthe only realistic way of bringing the lasting peace and security\u201d to the region.<\/p>\n<p>In December last year, a UN Security Council resolution, which was approved with 14 votes in favor and an abstention by former US President Barack Obama\u2019s administration, \u00a0underlined that \u201cit will not recognize any changes to the 4 June 1967 lines, including with regard to Jerusalem al-Quds, other than those agreed by the parties through negotiations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The entire Jerusalem al-Quds is currently under Israel\u2019s control, while the regime also claims the city\u2019s eastern part, which hosts the third holiest Muslim site.<\/p>\n<p>The city has been designated as \u201coccupied\u201d under international law since the 1967 Arab War, which Palestinians want as the capital of their future state.<\/p>\n<p>Trump had vowed during his presidential campaign that he would relocate the US embassy in order to court pro-Israel voters.<\/p>\n<p>Palestinians have repeatedly warned Trump against such an action, saying it would deliver a death blow to any prospects of the resolution of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict and fuel extremism in the region.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The UN Security Council is set to hold an emergency meeting on the recognition by the US of Jerusalem al-Quds as the \u201ccapital\u201d of Israel as world leaders and political figures continue to censure Washington\u2019s highly contentious move.
