China’s air force says it has held\u00a0another round of drills in the\u00a0South China Sea and the\u00a0Western Pacific in preparation for possible future wars.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

“<\/strong>Air Force exercises are rehearsals for future wars and are the most direct preparation for combat,”<\/em> it said in a statement on Sunday.<\/p>\n

The drill came after\u00a0a US\u00a0Navy destroyer on Friday sailed within 12 nautical miles of an artificial\u00a0island China has built in the South China Sea, provoking\u00a0condemnation from Beijing, which claims most of the strategic\u00a0waterway.<\/p>\n

Beijing said two Chinese ships \u201cwarned off\u201d<\/em> the vessel and blasted the move as \u201cserious provocation,<\/em>\u201d stating that\u00a0such military activities posed a challenge to China\u2019s \u201csovereignty and security.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

A US Navy destroyer has carried out a “freedom of navigation” operation, sailing close to the disputed South China Sea island controlled by China.<\/p><\/div>\n

The air force said its aircraft, including H-6K bombers and Su-30\u00a0and Su-35 fighters, carried out combat\u00a0patrols over the South China Sea and exercises in the Western\u00a0Pacific.<\/p>\n

The flights aim\u00a0to help\u00a0increase the air force’s ability to fight far out at sea, the statement said.<\/p>\n

The more exercises China practices far from its shores the\u00a0better it will be positioned as “an important force for managing\u00a0and controlling crises, containing war and winning battles,”<\/em>\u00a0it\u00a0added.<\/p>\n

Last month, the top US admiral in the Asia-Pacific told Congress that America must prepare for the possibility of war with China which has shown a “crystal clear<\/em>” intent to dominate the South China Sea.<\/p>\n

The top US admiral in the Pacific has told Congress that America must prepare for the possibility of war with China.<\/p><\/div>\n

Earlier that month, the Trump administration proposed\u00a0a military budget of $716 billion for fiscal 2019, part of an ambitious effort to substantially boost Pentagon spending after citing threats from Russia, China and North Korea.<\/p>\n

Beijing sees American military presence in regional waters \u2014 far from US territory \u2014 as a potential security threat. China is wary of US military buildup in the region as well as Washington’s ties with Taiwan which Beijing regards as\u00a0a part of Chinese territory.<\/p>\n

China is in the midst of a\u00a0military modernization\u00a0program\u00a0overseen by President Xi Jinping with a heavy focus on\u00a0its air force and navy, from building stealth fighters to adding\u00a0aircraft carriers.<\/p>\n
