{"id":13796,"date":"2018-05-25T22:31:31","date_gmt":"2018-05-25T22:31:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wilayah.info\/en\/?p=13796"},"modified":"2018-05-25T22:31:31","modified_gmt":"2018-05-25T22:31:31","slug":"nearly-dozen-militants-slain-as-iraqi-forces-thwart-attacks-in-kirkuk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wilayah.info\/en\/nearly-dozen-militants-slain-as-iraqi-forces-thwart-attacks-in-kirkuk\/","title":{"rendered":"Nearly dozen militants slain as Iraqi forces thwart attacks in Kirkuk"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"item-text\">\n<p><strong>Nearly a dozen members of the Daesh Takfiri terrorist group have been killed after Iraqi security forces, supported by pro-government fighters from Popular Mobilization Units, foiled their attacks in the country\u2019s northern oil-rich province of Kirkuk.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Iraqi\u00a0Joint Operations Command (JOC) spokesman Brigadier General\u00a0Yahya Rasool\u00a0said a joint force from Hawija police and voluntary fighters, better known by the Arabic word Hashd al-Sha\u2019abi, repelled militant attacks on the villages of Gharib and Hanaf, south of the provincial capital city of Kirkuk, killing 11 extremists in the process, Arabic-language al-Taghier television network reported.<\/p>\n<p>Rasool added that five Takfiris clad in explosive vests were among the slain militants.<\/p>\n<p>A policeman and a Hashd al-Sha\u2019abi fighter were killed during the clashes as well.<\/p>\n<p>Separately, the JOC announced in a statement that Iraqi F-16 fighter jets had bombarded Daesh positions and a weapons cache in Syria\u2019s Hegeen region, located 40 kilometers from the border town of al-Qa&#8217;im in Iraq\u2019s western province of al-Anbar.<\/p>\n<p>The statement added that the militant sites were completely destroyed in the aerial attacks.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/217.218.67.233\/\/photo\/20180525\/f536e8ae-dc51-4733-86e5-4c9f5b9b0903.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"555\" height=\"312\" \/><figcaption>This file picture shows an F-16 fighter jet operated by the Iraqi Air Force. (Photo by AFP)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Iraqi authorities have on occasions stated that they work closely with the Syrian government to monitor and target terrorist positions\u00a0based on the efforts of intelligence and information departments of the security coordination committee formed between Baghdad, Damascus, Tehran and Moscow years ago, as well as coordination with the so-called US-led anti-Daesh coalition.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we perform a strike, we will coordinate with the international coalition, the joint security center and all the relevant parties. As we work together, we follow the principle of partnership to ensure safety and harmony between allies,\u201d Iraqi Ministry of Defense spokesman Tahseen al-Khafaji said in late April.<\/p>\n<p>On April 23,\u00a0intelligence sources, speaking on condition of anonymity, told Arabic-language Shafaaq news agency that Daesh&#8217;s second-in-command\u00a0had been killed during an Iraqi airstrike inside the Syrian territory.<\/p>\n<p>The top-ranked extremist, identified by the nom de guerre Abu Luqman al-Suri, was killed in the attack.
