{"id":14657,"date":"2018-08-30T17:22:59","date_gmt":"2018-08-30T17:22:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wilayah.info\/en\/?p=14657"},"modified":"2018-08-30T17:22:59","modified_gmt":"2018-08-30T17:22:59","slug":"kashmir-tense-ahead-of-controversial-court-hearing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wilayah.info\/en\/kashmir-tense-ahead-of-controversial-court-hearing\/","title":{"rendered":"Kashmir tense ahead of controversial court hearing"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"item-text\">\n<p><strong>A curfew and general strike have brought Indian-controlled Kashmir to a standstill ahead of a court hearing affecting the Himalayan region&#8217;s autonomy. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Almost all businesses and institutions, including government offices and schools,\u00a0remained closed on Thursday, and traffic stayed off the streets across the main city of Srinagar.<\/p>\n<p>The shutdown, called by separatist and independence leaders,\u00a0was observed\u00a0in all major\u00a0towns\u00a0and villages of the\u00a0disputed valley.<\/p>\n<p>A large number of police and paramilitary soldiers in riot gear patrolled the streets and rolled out razor wire and spiked steel barriers across deserted roads in Srinagar to block demonstrations.<\/p>\n<p>Local residents said they were prevented from going out on the streets by major deployments of paramilitary troops.\u00a0&#8220;It is a curfew. No one can go out,&#8221; one school teacher in the city said.<\/p>\n<p>Pro-independence leaders have threatened major protests if the Supreme Court annuls a constitutional provision that bars Indians from outside Kashmir from buying land in the territory.<\/p>\n<p>The court will hold a hearing on Friday on the possible\u00a0removal of an article in the constitution\u00a0which provides special rights to the \u201cpermanent residents\u201d of the state.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/217.218.67.233\/\/photo\/20180830\/3fc59925-d7de-48f2-aebb-111799d659be.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"555\" height=\"312\" \/><figcaption>Indian paramilitary troopers question a Kashmiri boy during the first day of a strike against in Srinagar on August 30, 2018. (Photo by AFP)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Syed Ali Geelani, a top pro-independence leader, said the legal challenge against the special privileges is a bid by India&#8217;s Hindu nationalist government to alter Kashmir&#8217;s religious make-up.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I caution the freedom loving people of the state to remain vigilant against these ploys to change the Muslim-majority character of the state,&#8221; Geelani said in a statement released late Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>Prime Minister Narendra Modi&#8217;s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) wants to end Jammu and Kashmir&#8217;s special status, arguing that it is an obstacle to outside investment.<\/p>\n<p>Separatists have warned of &#8220;mass agitation&#8221; if changes are made to the status quo.<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday, New Delhi forces killed two suspected Kashmiri fighters in a gun battle in the northern district of Hajin during search operations, a day after at least four police officers and two rebels were killed in clashes.<\/p>\n<p>New Delhi has deployed some 500,000 soldiers to the disputed region to further boost security of the borderline and enforce a crackdown on pro-independence demonstrations in its share of Kashmir, where anti-India sentiments run deep.<\/p>\n<div data-oembed-url=\"https:\/\/www.presstv.com\/Detail\/2018\/08\/22\/571947\/India-Kashmir-Srinagar\">\n<div class=\"oembed\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.presstv.com\/Detail\/2018\/08\/22\/571947\/India-Kashmir-Srinagar\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/1452858779.rsc.cdn77.org\/photo\/20180822\/f3bd4c1b-ddd1-40f6-a841-da6664de1b5a.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"title\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.presstv.com\/Detail\/2018\/08\/22\/571947\/India-Kashmir-Srinagar\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">PressTV-Fierce clashes erupt in Kashmir after Eid prayers<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.presstv.com\/Detail\/2018\/08\/22\/571947\/India-Kashmir-Srinagar\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Police fired tear gas and pellet guns to disperse stone-throwing protesters in downtown Srinagar.<\/a><\/div>\n<p>Since last year, gun battles between government forces and pro-independence fighters seeking an end to the Indian rule in the disputed valley have become more frequent.<\/p>\n<p>Kashmir has been divided between India and Pakistan since the end of the British colonial rule in 1947. Both sides claim the Himalayan region in full. However, many people in New Delhi-controlled Kashmir, who are mainly Muslims, are opposed to Indian control and seek either autonomy or a\u00a0merger with Pakistan.<\/p>\n<p>New Delhi accuses Islamabad of supporting pro-independence fighters, an allegation rejected by the Pakistani government, which\u00a0in turn\u00a0is critical of India&#8217;s heavy military deployment to Kashmir.<\/p>\n<p>In June, the United Nations issued a\u00a0report, calling for an investigation into purported abuses by Indian security forces in Kashmir.
