(Photo by Reuters)<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div class=\"item-text\">\n<p><strong>Iran, Turkey and Russia throw their weight behind the Venezuelan government against a bizarre move by the US-backed opposition leader to proclaim himself \u201cpresident,\u201d warning Washington against interfering\u00a0in domestic affairs of the South American state.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>On Thursday, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman\u00a0Bahram Qassemi said the Islamic Republic \u201cbacks Venezuela\u2019s nation and legitimate government in the face of any foreign meddling in the country\u2019s domestic affairs or any illegitimate and illegal measure as such as attempts for a coup or moves against the people.\u201d\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cWe hope that any disagreement\u00a0and political problem in Venezuela will be resolved by the country\u2019s own people and government as soon as possible via legal and peaceful solutions,\u201d he added.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>On Wednesday,\u00a0Juan Guaido,\u00a0the leader of Venezuela\u2019s opposition-controlled National Assembly, abruptly declared himself the \u201cinterim president,\u201d quickly winning the backing of the US and its Latin American allies for his strange move.<\/strong><\/p>\n<div data-oembed-url=\"https:\/\/www.presstv.com\/Detail\/2019\/01\/23\/586616\/Guaido-acting--president-Venezuela\">\n<div class=\"oembed\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.presstv.com\/Detail\/2019\/01\/23\/586616\/Guaido-acting--president-Venezuela\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.presstv.com\/photo\/20190123\/cb451ee5-ad28-4983-b8ac-9558d335b700.jpg\" alt=\"PressTV-Venezuela's Guaido declares self acting president\" \/><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"title\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.presstv.com\/Detail\/2019\/01\/23\/586616\/Guaido-acting--president-Venezuela\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">PressTV-Venezuela&#8217;s Guaido declares self acting president<\/a><\/strong><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.presstv.com\/Detail\/2019\/01\/23\/586616\/Guaido-acting--president-Venezuela\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Addressing anti-government protesters in Caracas, Guaido took an oath, swearing himself in as interim president.<\/a><\/strong><\/div>\n<p><strong>Guaido\u2019s controversial announcement followed two nights of violent anti-government protests in working-class neighborhoods of the Venezuelan capital, Caracas.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>US President Donald Trump was quick to recognize Venezuela\u2019s self-proclaimed president, warning that \u201call options are on the table\u201d if Maduro responded with force against the opposition.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>In response, Maduro accused the opposition of seeking to stage a coup with Washington\u2019s backing, cutting off relations with the US and ordering all American diplomats to leave Venezuela within 72 hours.<\/strong><\/p>\n<div data-oembed-url=\"https:\/\/www.presstv.com\/Detail\/2019\/01\/23\/586548\/Venezuela-Maduro-US-relations-orders-coup-Pence\">\n<div class=\"oembed\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.presstv.com\/Detail\/2019\/01\/23\/586548\/Venezuela-Maduro-US-relations-orders-coup-Pence\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.presstv.com\/photo\/20190123\/c96f8345-b70a-45a1-a217-ed00bf976fa9.jpg\" alt=\"PressTV-Venezuela \u2018to fully revise US ties, declare measures soon\u2019\" \/><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"title\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.presstv.com\/Detail\/2019\/01\/23\/586548\/Venezuela-Maduro-US-relations-orders-coup-Pence\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">PressTV-Venezuela \u2018to fully revise US ties, declare measures soon\u2019<\/a><\/strong><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.presstv.com\/Detail\/2019\/01\/23\/586548\/Venezuela-Maduro-US-relations-orders-coup-Pence\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Venezuela President Nicolas Maduro orders \u201ca total revision of relations\u201d with the US, claiming that Washington has given \u201corders\u201d for a coup in the country.<\/a><\/strong><\/div>\n<p><strong>\u201cWe\u2019ve had enough interventionism, here we have dignity, damn it! Here is a people willing to defend this land,\u201d he said in a televised address from the presidential palace.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Stand tall, we stand by you: Erdogan to Maduro<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Separately on Thursday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan voiced solidarity with his Venezuelan counterpart in a telephone conversation.<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>\u201cOur president called and extended Turkey\u2019s support to Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and said \u2018My brother Maduro! Stand tall, we stand by you!\u2019,\u201d Turkish presidential spokesman Ibrahim Kalin said on Twitter.<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Moreover, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu slammed the US interference in Venezuela\u2019s domestic politics.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cThe US and some Latin American countries have repeatedly intervened in the internal affairs of Venezuela,\u201d he told\u00a0A Haber TV channel.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Similarly Russia voiced its support for the Venezuelan government, warning any US against military intervention in the South American state.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Russia: US moves could lead to bloodshed<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Russia, in turn, stressed that it would stand by Venezuela to protect its sovereignty, warning that Washington\u2019s moves could lead to lawlessness and bloodshed in Venezuela.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Its Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement that events in Venezuela are reaching a dangerous point, and that the US was turning a blind eye to international law.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Interfax cited Sergei Ryabkov, the Russian deputy foreign minister, as saying Moscow would stand with Venezuela to protect its sovereignty and the principle of non-interference in its domestic affairs.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>In a statement, the deputy spokesman for UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres said that the UN chief was urging all groups to lower tensions and pursue every effort to prevent an escalation.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cThe United Nations firmly rejects any kind of political violence. We underline the urgent need for all relevant actors to commit to inclusive and credible political negotiations to address the challenges facing the country, with full respect for the rule of law and human rights,\u201d Farhan Haq said.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Oil-rich Venezuela is mired in economic turmoil, with hyperinflation, power cuts and shortages of basic items.
