Soleimani tops Foreign Policy\u2019s list of global defense &#038; security thinkers"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure class=\"item-image\"><figcaption id=\"mainFigCap\">Major General Qassem Soleimani, commander of the IRGC\u2019s Quds Force, is pictured during an anti-Daesh operation in Iraq\u2019s Salahudin Province in 2015.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div class=\"item-text\">\n<p><strong>Major General Qassem Soleimani, who commands the Quds Force of Iran\u2019s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC),\u00a0has topped Foreign Policy (FP)\u2019s 2019\u00a0list of Global Thinkers in the defense and security field.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Washington-based magazine recently published its 10th annual special edition of Global Thinkers with 10 categories of 10 people each.<\/p>\n<p>It placed General Soleimani on top of the list of the most influential people in the defense and security sector, followed by\u00a0German Defense Minister Ursula von der Leyen.<\/p>\n<div data-oembed-url=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ForeignPolicy\/status\/1087728667730628608\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">They are the thinkers and doers of the last 12 months, shaping our world\u2014for better or for worse\u2014as we know it. Read our full #FPGlobalThinkers list here: https:\/\/t.co\/STXoTcy92S pic.twitter.com\/tE4LIb9g4Y<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Foreign Policy (@ForeignPolicy) January 22, 2019<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<p>A short write-up on the senior Iranian commander\u00a0described him as the \u201cpublic face of Iran\u2019s response to US President Donald Trump\u2019s threats.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>General Soleimani made headlines last July, when he delivered a blistering response to an all-caps tweet addressed to President Hassan Rouhani, in which Trump had issued a military threat against the Islamic Republic.<\/p>\n<p>The US president had threatened Iran with actions \u201cthe likes of which few throughout history have ever suffered before.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In a fiery speech, the senior general responded, \u201cTrump! You must not threaten our nation and must not insult our president\u2026 You must know what you are talking about; ask your predecessors and take advantage of their experiences,\u201d General Soleimani emphasized.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWe are near you, where you can\u2019t even imagine\u2026Come;\u00a0we are ready. We are the man of this arena. You know that this war would mean annihilation of all your means. You may begin the war, but it is us who will end it,\u201d he added.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Trump threatened Iran again in a tweet in November inspired by popular American drama series \u201cGame of Thrones.\u201d It featured a picture of himself with the caption \u201csanctions are coming november 5.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>General Soleimani fired back at\u00a0Trump by posting an Instagram photo\u00a0with the caption, \u201cI will stand against you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The IRGC commander is widely seen as a strategist in the counter-terrorism operations against Takfiri terrorists in Syria and Iraq.<\/p>\n<p>The powerful general leads Iranian\u00a0military advisers backing the national armies of Syria and Iraq in their fight against terrorism.<\/p>\n<p>General Soleimani was present on the ground to supervise the decisive stages of Iran-backed operations against Daesh, which lost in late 2017 all the territories it had seized in Iraq and Syria.<\/p>\n<p>He had been photographed on anti-terrorism battlefields from Iraq\u2019s Mosul to Syria\u2019s Aleppo.<\/p>\n<p>The general took personal command of the battle against Takfiri militants in the Syrian city of Bukamal, located in Dayr al-Zawr Province, in November 2017.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/217.218.67.233\/\/photo\/20190124\/9c198334-3209-46cf-a4db-90d2d825aef3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"555\" height=\"312\" \/><figcaption>Major General Qassem Soleimani is seen during an anti-Daesh operation in the city of Bukamal, Dayr al-Zawr Province, Syria.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In Iraq, at the height of Daesh\u2019s terror camp in neighboring Iraq, he assisted the Baghdad government in commanding the operation to retake the strategic oil-rich city of Tikrit from Daesh in 2015.<\/p>\n<p>He declared the end of Daesh\u2019s territorial rule in a letter\u00a0addressed to Leader\u00a0of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei\u00a0in November 2017.<\/p>\n<div data-oembed-url=\"https:\/\/www.presstv.com\/Detail\/2017\/11\/21\/542924\/Iran-General-Solemani-Leader-Daesh-Iraq-Syria\">\n<div class=\"oembed\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.presstv.com\/photo\/20171121\/6fb9ea4c-b897-4ff0-9204-8006339985fd.jpg\" alt=\"PressTV-General Soleimani congratulates Leader on fall of Daesh\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"title\">PressTV-General Soleimani congratulates Leader on fall of Daesh<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>In a congratulatory message to Iran&#8217;s Leader, the commander of the IRGC Quds Force hails the final victory over the Daesh terror group both in Iraq and Syria.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In January 2015, the head of Iraq\u2019s Badr Organization credited Tehran and Soleimani with saving the Baghdad government when Daesh first unleashed its campaign of terror in the neighboring country a year earlier.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/217.218.67.233\/\/photo\/20190124\/2d4d38dc-79c0-4812-b6db-7654bb6bf297.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"555\" height=\"312\" \/><figcaption>Major General Qassem Soleimani, who commands the Quds Force of Iran\u2019s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC), is pictured in northern Iraq in May 2017.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cIf it were not for the cooperation of the Islamic republic of Iran and General Soleimani, we would not today have a government headed by Haider al-Abadi in Baghdad,\u201d Hadi al-Ameri said.<\/p>\n<p>Several reports have also emerged over the past few years of assassination plots against Soleimani by the US, Israel and Saudi Arabia \u2013 which are believed to be among the major supporters of the Takfiri terrorists wreaking havoc on the Middle East.<\/p>\n<p>In November 2018 , <em>The New York Times\u00a0<\/em>reported\u00a0that Saudi Major General Ahmed al-Assiri\u00a0took part in a meeting in Riyadh in 2017 that involved plans to assassinate the kingdom\u2019s \u201cdetermined enemy.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A recent report by\u00a0Kuwaiti newspaper\u00a0al-Jarida also said that Washington gave Israel a green light to assassinate Soleimani.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Major General Qassem Soleimani, commander of the IRGC\u2019s Quds Force, is pictured during an anti-Daesh operation in Iraq\u2019s Salahudin Province in 2015.
