(Photo by AFP)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>During the hearing, Haspel was joined by US Director of National Intelligence Daniel Coats, who acknowledged that the US intelligence community believed Tehran was not seeking to develop its nuclear weapons capabilities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe do not believe Iran is currently undertaking the key activities we judge necessary to produce a nuclear device,\u201d Coats said, adding that Iranian officials have \u201cpublicly threatened to push the boundaries\u201d of the 2015 nuclear deal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIranian officials have publicly threatened to reverse some of Iran\u2019s Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action\u00a0commitments \u2014 and resume nuclear activities that the JCPOA limits \u2014 if Iran does not gain the tangible trade and investment benefits it expected from the deal,\u201d the US intelligence chief said.<\/p>\n<div data-oembed-url=\"https:\/\/www.presstv.com\/Detail\/2019\/01\/13\/585687\/Iran-20-nuclear-fuel-Salehi\">\n<div class=\"oembed\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.presstv.com\/photo\/20190113\/8db91030-d773-493c-aab0-f3aca7c15fe8.jpg\" alt=\"PressTV-Iran starts designing 20% modern nuclear fuel: Salehi\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"title\">PressTV-Iran starts designing 20% modern nuclear fuel: Salehi<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Iran&#8217;s nuclear chief says the country is taking preliminary steps toward production of 20-percent modern nuclear fuel.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>President Donald Trump withdrew the US in May 2018 from the landmark Iran nuclear deal, officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA),\u00a0and decided to re-impose unilateral sanctions against Tehran.<\/p>\n<p>Trump, a vociferous critic of the Iran nuclear deal signed in 2015, had earlier called the JCPOA the \u201cworst deal ever\u201d and threatened to tear it up.<\/p>\n<p>Under the deal, reached between Iran and six major powers &#8212; the United States, Britain, France, Germany, Russia and China &#8212; Tehran agreed to put limits on its nuclear program in exchange for the removal of nuclear-related sanctions.<\/p>\n<div data-oembed-url=\"https:\/\/www.presstv.com\/Detail\/2019\/01\/28\/587069\/Iran-nuclear-Vienna-IAEA-Amano\">\n<div class=\"oembed\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.presstv.com\/photo\/20190128\/2e8d58db-7d2c-4979-a953-8371e80023f4.jpg\" alt=\"PressTV-\u2018Iran to stay in JCPOA only if it serves its interests\u2019\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"title\">PressTV-\u2018Iran to stay in JCPOA only if it serves its interests\u2019<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Iranian deputy foreign minister reiterates the country\u2019s stance that it will remain committed to its 2015 nuclear agreement if the deal serves its interests.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Last November, the Trump administration announced the re-imposition of the \u201ctoughest\u201d sanctions ever against Iran&#8217;s banking and energy sectors with the aim of cutting off the country&#8217;s oil sales and crucial exports.<\/p>\n<p>A first round of American sanctions targeted Iran&#8217;s access to the US dollar, metals trading, coal, industrial software, and auto sector.<\/p>\n<p>The US administration hoped to get the other parties to scrap the deal likewise, but instead, they stressed that not only would they stick to the agreement, but they would also work to sustain it in the face of increased US pressure. Europeans have on\u00a0numerous occasions deemed\u00a0the nuclear deal\u00a0an important element of international security.<\/p>\n<p>The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has, so far, endorsed Iran\u2019s commitment to the JCPOA on 13 occasions.<\/p>\n<p>Iran has said it will remain committed to the deal for the time being, pending negotiations with other signatories to the JCPOA to see if Iran\u2019s interests would still be protected under an accord without the US.<\/p>\n<p>Tehran has many options in dealing with the US withdrawal from the international accord and would consider them based on its national interests, according to Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>CIA Director Gina Haspel testifies at a Senate Intelligence Committee hearing on &#8220;Worldwide Threats&#8221; January 29, 2019 in Washington, DC.
