Chief negotiator for Yemen\u2019s popular Houthi Ansarullah movement Mohammed Abdul-Salam has met with British Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt\u00a0in a rare meeting in Oman\u2019s capital city of Muscat to discuss ongoing peace negotiations related to the Yemeni port city of Hudaydah.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Abdul-Salam reiterated Yemen\u2019s commitment to an agreement reached in Sweden\u2019s Stockholm in December last year in the meeting, Yemen\u2019s official\u00a0Saba Net\u00a0news agency reported on Friday.<\/p>\n

The Stockholm agreement was reached between the Ansarullah movement and the former Saudi-backed regime on a ceasefire in Hudaydah.<\/p>\n

Last week, rival factions also agreed to a provisional agreement known as \u201cPhase 1,\u201d further detailing the mutual pullout of forces from the port city under the UN-sponsored deal.<\/p>\n

Under the follow-up agreement, the Houthis are to withdraw from the ports of Hudaydah, Saleef, and Ras Isa. Saudi-led forces will, in return, retreat from the eastern outskirts of Hudaydah, where battles had raged before the ceasefire went into effect on December 18.<\/p>\n

The rival parties in Yemen have reportedly reached a deal on \u201cPhase 1\u201d of their mutual redeployment of forces in Hudaydah.<\/a><\/div>\n

Speaking to Hunt, Abdul-Salam, however, expressed concern about what he described as the Saudi-led coalition\u2019s attempts at introducing new conditions to the already-agreed \u201cPhase 1\u201d arrangement.<\/p>\n

Abdul-Salam rejected any alteration of the previously\u00a0agreed deal.<\/p>\n

The ceasefire\u00a0has so far\u00a0put an end to major fighting in Hudaydah after\u00a0Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates launched an offensive to gain control of the\u00a0city \u2014 a lifeline for millions of Yemenis \u2014 in June 2018.<\/p>\n

The offensive stalled after facing\u00a0strong resistance from Yemeni armed forces \u2014 led by the Houthis \u2014 as well as the city\u2019s residents.<\/p>\n

That operation was\u00a0part of a Saudi-led war on Yemen that has been underway since March 2015 to reinstall the former Yemeni regime.<\/p>\n

The war has taken a heavy toll on the country\u2019s infrastructure, destroying hospitals, schools, and factories. The UN has said that a record 22.2 million Yemenis are in dire need of food, including 8.4 million threatened by severe hunger.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
