Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei never trusted Europeans with their pledge\u00a0to save the 2015 Iran nuclear deal,<\/strong>\u00a0a new video clip released\u00a0on Monday shows.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The video related to a private meeting between Ayatollah Khamenei and President Hassan Rouhani\u2019s cabinet last\u00a0July shows the Leader advising against tying Iran’s economy to Europe\u2019s special payment channel.<\/p>\n

Ayatollah Khamenei\u2019s official website published the clip for the first time on Monday,\u00a0revealing\u00a0the Leader\u2019s reservations about\u00a0Europe’s bid\u00a0to guard\u00a0trade with Iran against US sanctions.<\/p>\n

The US imposed new sanctions on the Islamic Republic after President Donald Trump abandoned the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) in May 2018.<\/p>\n

The Europeans did not follow suit, trying instead to keep Iran in the agreement by promising incentives\u00a0which generated new expectations in the government.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne day we tied all of the country\u2019s economic issues to the JCPOA and\u00a0the JCPOA could not resolve our country\u2019s economic issues or\u00a0help us in any significant way,\u201d the Leader says in the video.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The Leader also advises the government to avoid conditioning people to\u00a0the European package. “Don\u2019t make this a main issue; either the European package arrives or it doesn\u2019t.”<\/p>\n

“We have things to do in our country, we have potentials and\u00a0these potentials need to materialize. Follow those potentials, don\u2019t tie economic enhancement to something that is not in our control.\u201d<\/p>\n

After spending months discussing possible mechanisms to guarantee continued trade with Tehran, the Europeans\u00a0last month unveiled the Instrument in Support of Trade Exchanges (INSTEX) with strings attached.<\/p>\n

Senior Iranian officials have objected to Europe\u2019s preconditions, which require Iran to join the FATF (the Financial Action Task Force) and start negotiations on\u00a0its missile program before INSTEX enters into force.<\/p>\n

In the meeting, the Leader hit out at European\u00a0\u201cmalevolence\u201d for dragging their\u00a0feet\u00a0on the payment channel until November, when the first round of US sanctions targeting Iran\u2019s oil exports took effect.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey are after this and such is their evil,\u201d he stressed.<\/p>\n

\u201cI read in the paper that Trump has said ‘I encouraged [British Prime Minister Theresa] May to sustain pressure on Iran. [And she needed absolutely no encouragement] because she, in fact, also encourages me’ to be tough with Iran,\u201d the Leader said. \u201cThat\u2019s who they are and yet they call Mr. Rouhani to convey their respects.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Trump made the remarks during a joint press conference<\/a> with May at Chequers, the prime minister\u2019s country estate in Buckinghamshire, England in July last year.<\/p>\n

The Leader noted that Europe\u2019s \u201cevil nature\u201d — as\u00a0displayed by various European rulers in the past centuries — was not limited to its\u00a0current policies.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
