Parliament speaker Ali Larijani says Iran no longer holds value for Europe\u2019s demands as European governments have let it down in fighting hostile US policies, pledging that the Islamic Republic will \u201cget even” with the US on its own.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cWe are trying to find out why European leaders and the European Union only support us in rhetoric\u00a0or only [use words] to express regret at America\u2019s actions,\u201d Larijani said during a meeting with Wolfgang Gerstl, the head of Austria-Iran parliamentary friendship group in Tehran on early Monday.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\u201cSure you might say there are problems because of US pressure and it might sound logical but we look at this from our own point of view and the most important thing for us is that this behavior has raised questions about EU\u2019s credibility and it means that the EU lacks the weight to solve problems,\u201d he asserted.<\/p>\n

Larijani said Europe has yet to deliver on the promises it made to Tehran to save the 2015 nuclear deal in the wake of US President Donald Trump\u2019s decision to abandon it last year.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe European Union, too, has taken certain measures but we are yet to see any results,\u201d Larijani said.<\/p>\n

Following Trump\u2019s announcement in May 2018, Washington moved to reinstate sanctions that had been removed under the nuclear deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). He also introduced new bans targeting Iran\u2019s oil and other industries, warning Europeans against business with Iran.<\/p>\n

Facing pressure from Tehran to save the deal, the EU took months before unveiling the Instrument in Support of Trade Exchanges (INSTEX) in January 2019.<\/p>\n
