Al-Fatiha, Verse 1-5"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>40<\/p>\n<p>CHAPTER 1, VERSES 1-5<\/p>\n<p>In the name of All\u00e3h, the Beneficent, the Merciful<\/p>\n<p>(1)<\/p>\n<p>. All praise is due to All\u00e3h, the Lord of the<\/p>\n<p>Worlds<\/p>\n<p>(2)<\/p>\n<p>. The Beneficent the Merciful<\/p>\n<p>(3)<\/p>\n<p>. The<\/p>\n<p>Master of the Day of Judgement<\/p>\n<p>(4)<\/p>\n<p>. Thee do we<\/p>\n<p>worship and Thee do we beseech for help<\/p>\n<p>(5)<\/p>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>*<\/p>\n<p>*<\/p>\n<p>*<\/p>\n<p>*<\/p>\n<p>*<\/p>\n<p>COMMENTARY<\/p>\n<p>QUR\u2019\u00c3N:<\/p>\n<p>In the name of All\u00e3h, the Beneficent, the<\/p>\n<p>Merciful<\/p>\n<p>:<\/p>\n<p>People often take the name of one of their great and<\/p>\n<p>powerful personalities at the time of doing or beginning a work.<\/p>\n<p>By this association, it is believed, the work would achieve<\/p>\n<p>success, greatness and blessings; or that it would be a memorial<\/p>\n<p>to keep the named one<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;<\/p>\n<p>s memory alive for ever. This is also<\/p>\n<p>observed in naming a child, a project, a house or an association<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 they give it the name of a deeply loved or highly respected<\/p>\n<p>person, so that his name would continue in this form; for<br \/>\n41<\/p>\n<p>AL-MIZ\u00c3N<\/p>\n<p>example, a man names his son after his father, in order to<\/p>\n<p>perpetuate the father<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;<\/p>\n<p>s memory.<\/p>\n<p>This verse runs on the same line. All\u00e3h began His speech<\/p>\n<p>with His Own name \u2014 Great is His name \u2014 so that the ideas<\/p>\n<p>taught in this chapter be stamped by, and associated with it.<\/p>\n<p>Also, it teaches a lesson to mankind, showing them the perfect<\/p>\n<p>manner of starting all their talks and actions; it guides them to<\/p>\n<p>put the stamp of the divine name on all their activities; doing<\/p>\n<p>every work for the sake of All\u00e3h, associating it with His good<\/p>\n<p>names and attributes. In this way that action would neither be<\/p>\n<p>rendered null and void, nor remain incomplete; it has been<\/p>\n<p>started in the name of All\u00e3h, and negation and annihilation<\/p>\n<p>cannot reach that sacred name.<\/p>\n<p>All\u00e3h has declared variously in the Qur\u2019\u00e3n that what is<\/p>\n<p>not for His Person must perish, is in vain; He will proceed to<\/p>\n<p>the deeds not done for His sake and shall render them as<\/p>\n<p>scattered floating dust; He shall forfeit what they have done and<\/p>\n<p>shall nullify their deeds; and that nothing shall remain except<\/p>\n<p>His honoured Person.<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, what is done for the sake of All\u00e3h and<\/p>\n<p>performed in His name, shall continue and will not perish.<\/p>\n<p>Everything, every work and every affair shall have its share of<\/p>\n<p>eternity \u2014 as much as it is related to All\u00e3h. It is this reality that<\/p>\n<p>has been hinted at in the universally accepted tradition of the<\/p>\n<p>Prophet: \u201cEvery important affair, not begun with the name of<\/p>\n<p>All\u00e3h, shall remain incomplete . . .\u201d The word<\/p>\n<p>al-abtar<\/p>\n<p>(<\/p>\n<p>\ufeae\u064e\ufe98\u0652\ufe91\u064e\ufefb\u064e\u0627<\/p>\n<p>= translated here as \u201cincomplete&#8221;) means a thing whose end is<\/p>\n<p>cut off, an animal whose tail is severed.<\/p>\n<p>The preposition \u201c<\/p>\n<p>b i<\/p>\n<p>\u201d (<\/p>\n<p>\u0640 \ufe91<\/p>\n<p>=<\/p>\n<p>in, with), in the phrase \u201cIn<\/p>\n<p>the name of All\u00e3h&#8221;, is related to an implied verb, \u201cI begin&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>This verse, at this particular place, begins the speech which is a<\/p>\n<p>single action; this singleness comes from the singleness of its<\/p>\n<p>meaning; that is, the meaning intended to be conveyed, the aim<\/p>\n<p>and purpose of the speech.<\/p>\n<p>All\u00e3h has mentioned the purpose for which His speech \u2014<br \/>\n42<\/p>\n<p>CHAPTER 1, VERSES 1-5<\/p>\n<p>the whole Qur\u2019\u00e3n \u2014 has been revealed: . . . indeed, there has<\/p>\n<p>come to you a light and a clear Book from All\u00e3h; with it All\u00e3h<\/p>\n<p>guides him who follows His pleasure into the ways of safety . .<\/p>\n<p>. (5:15\u201416). There are other verses which show that the aim<\/p>\n<p>with which the Book \u2014 the speech of All\u00e3h \u2014 has been sent<\/p>\n<p>down is the guidance of the people.<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, the full import of the sentence would be as<\/p>\n<p>follows: The guidance, total guidance is begun with the name<\/p>\n<p>of All\u00e3h, the Beneficent, the Merciful; He is All\u00e3h, Whom the<\/p>\n<p>servants return to; He is Beneficent, Who has opened the way<\/p>\n<p>of His All-encompassing mercy for believers and disbelievers<\/p>\n<p>alike, the mercy which provides them with all that is necessary<\/p>\n<p>and good for their existence and life; He is Merciful, Who has<\/p>\n<p>reserved His special mercy for the believers, the mercy which<\/p>\n<p>ensures their happiness in the life hereafter and their nearness<\/p>\n<p>to their Lord. All\u00e3h has said: . . .<\/p>\n<p>and My mercy encompasses<\/p>\n<p>all things<\/p>\n<p>;<\/p>\n<p>so I will ordain it<\/p>\n<p>(specially)<\/p>\n<p>for those who guard<\/p>\n<p>(against evil)<\/p>\n<p>and pay zak\u00e3t, and those who believe in our<\/p>\n<p>signs<\/p>\n<p>(7:156). This explanation has been written, putting this<\/p>\n<p>verse in the framework of the whole Qur\u2019\u00e3n, of which it is the<\/p>\n<p>first sentence.<\/p>\n<p>Again, All\u00e3h has repeatedly mentioned \u201cchapter\u201d in His<\/p>\n<p>speech. For example:<\/p>\n<p>Say<\/p>\n<p>:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen bring a chapter like<\/p>\n<p>this&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>(10:38);<\/p>\n<p>Say<\/p>\n<p>:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen bring ten chapters like it, forged<\/p>\n<p>. . .<\/p>\n<p>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>(11:13);<\/p>\n<p>And whenever a chapter is revealed . . .<\/p>\n<p>(9:86);<\/p>\n<p>(This is)<\/p>\n<p>a chapter which We have revealed . . .<\/p>\n<p>(24:1)<\/p>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>It<\/p>\n<p>shows that All\u00e3h Himself has divided His speech in various<\/p>\n<p>parts, each part being called a chapter. It naturally means that<\/p>\n<p>every chapter is a single unit in structure and in fullness of<\/p>\n<p>meaning; and that that unity is not found between various<\/p>\n<p>verses of a chapter or between one chapter and the other. It<\/p>\n<p>necessarily follows that the theme of every chapter is different<\/p>\n<p>from the other; every chapter is revealed with a certain aim in<\/p>\n<p>view, and when that aim is achieved the chapter comes to its<\/p>\n<p>end.<br \/>\n43<\/p>\n<p>AL-MIZ\u00c3N<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, the verse, \u201cIn the name of All\u00e3h, the<\/p>\n<p>Beneficent, the Merciful\u201d coming at the beginning of every<\/p>\n<p>chapter, refers to the particular theme of that chapter.<\/p>\n<p>Accordingly, this verse, at the beginning of this chapter of<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Opening&#8221;, refers also to the theme of this chapter. It<\/p>\n<p>appears from its semantic flow that its purpose is to praise<\/p>\n<p>All\u00e3h and to pledge the believer&#8217;s servitude (declaring that he<\/p>\n<p>worships only All\u00e3h and seeks help from Him only) and then to<\/p>\n<p>pray for divine guidance. This speech has been uttered by<\/p>\n<p>All\u00e3h, on be-half of His servant, so that the servant may<\/p>\n<p>learn how, by repeating these words, he may show his<\/p>\n<p>gratitude to, and servitude before, All\u00e3h.<\/p>\n<p>This pledging of servitude is the important work which<\/p>\n<p>the servant of All\u00e3h intends to do; and which he begins in the<\/p>\n<p>name of All\u00e3h, the Beneficent, the Merciful. In this context,<\/p>\n<p>this verse would mean: In Thy name, I pledge my servitude<\/p>\n<p>to Thee.<\/p>\n<p>In this first verse of this chapter, therefore, the<\/p>\n<p>preposition, \u201cin&#8221;, is related to the implied verb, \u201cI begin&#8221;;<\/p>\n<p>and the aim is to perfect the sincere servitude by addressing<\/p>\n<p>the pledge to All\u00e3h Himself. Some people have said that the<\/p>\n<p>implied verb is \u201cI seek help\u201d (by); although this view is not<\/p>\n<p>objectionable, but \u201cI begin\u201d is more appropriate \u2014 the<\/p>\n<p>chapter explicitly seeks divine help, \u201cand Thee do we<\/p>\n<p>beseech for help&#8221;; therefore, it is not necessary in the<\/p>\n<p>beginning.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<\/p>\n<p>al-Ism<\/p>\n<p>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u064f\ufee2\u0652\ufeb3\u0650\ufefb\u064e\u0627<\/p>\n<p>(<\/p>\n<p>= name) is the word that points to the<\/p>\n<p>named thing or person. It is derived from<\/p>\n<p>as-simah<\/p>\n<p>(<\/p>\n<p>\ufe94\u064e\ufee4\ufc62\ufeb4\ufedf\u0627<\/p>\n<p>= sign, identifying mark) or<\/p>\n<p>as-sumuww<\/p>\n<p>(<\/p>\n<p>\ufeee\u064f\ufee4\ufc61\ufeb4\ufedf\u0627<\/p>\n<p>\u0651<\/p>\n<p>= height,<\/p>\n<p>eminence). In any case, it is the word by which an individual<\/p>\n<p>thing or person is spoken of or spoken to.
