Iraqi fighters from pro-government Popular Mobilization Units (PMU) have launched the second phase of a military\u00a0operation to purge the vast desert in the country\u2019s western province of Anbar along the border with Syria of Daesh\u00a0terrorist group members.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The media bureau of the voluntary forces \u2013 better known by the Arabic name Hashd al-Sha\u2019abi \u2013announced in a statement on Monday that the fighters and Iraqi army troopers,\u00a0backed\u00a0by\u00a0military\u00a0aircraft,\u00a0mounted an offensive to flush out remaining Daesh terrorists in al-Jazeera\u00a0region.<\/p>\n

The forces added that Hashd al-Sha\u2019abi fighters and government forces were now heading towards al-\u2018Awinah area.<\/p>\n

The media bureau\u00a0of the\u00a0Iraqi Joint Operations Command\u00a0later stated that government troops had destroyed two militant hideouts\u00a0and as many vehicles rigged with explosives.<\/p>\n

Iraq’s army and the voluntary forces began the first phase of the Will of Victory Operation early on Sunday, the military said in a statement, adding that\u00a0the operation would last several days and was aimed at securing\u00a0the province of Anbar and the central and northern regions of Salahuddin and Nineveh.<\/p>\n

“We press on the hands of our heroic forces that will achieve victory with the will of its heroes against the gangs of Daesh,” said Iraqi Prime Minister Adel Abdul-Mahdi.<\/p>\n

“May God protect you and make you victorious,” he added.<\/p>\n

Iraq\u2019s armed forces launch a new operation to take out Daesh terrorists in areas in the country\u2019s western areas stretching to the Syrian border.<\/a><\/div>\n

Former Iraqi prime minister Haider al-Abadi declared the end of military operations against Daesh in the country on December 9, 2017.<\/p>\n

On July 10 that year, he had formally declared victory over Daesh in Mosul, which served as the terrorists\u2019 main urban stronghold in Iraq.<\/p>\n

In the run-up to Mosul’s liberation, Iraqi army soldiers and volunteer Hashd al-Sha\u2019abi fighters\u00a0had made sweeping gains against Daesh.<\/p>\n
