{"id":19352,"date":"2020-10-18T03:56:30","date_gmt":"2020-10-18T03:56:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wilayah.info\/en\/?p=19352"},"modified":"2020-10-18T03:56:30","modified_gmt":"2020-10-18T03:56:30","slug":"iran-declares-official-termination-of-un-arms-embargo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wilayah.info\/en\/iran-declares-official-termination-of-un-arms-embargo\/","title":{"rendered":"Iran declares official termination of UN arms embargo"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Iran\u2019s Foreign Ministry says the UN Security Council\u2019s arms restrictions against Tehran have all been terminated in defiance of the United States\u2019 efforts.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs of today [October 18, 2020], all restrictions on the transfer of arms, related activities and financial services\u00a0<em>to<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>from<\/em>\u00a0the Islamic Republic of Iran, and all prohibitions regarding the entry into or transit through territories of the United Nations Member States previously imposed on a number of Iranian citizens and military officials, are all automatically terminated,\u201d a statement by the Foreign Ministry said.<\/p>\n<p>The longstanding UN ban on the sale of arms from\/to Iran is terminated under the terms of the UN Security Council Resolution 2231 that blessed the 2015 nuclear deal between the Islamic Republic and world powers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs of today, the Islamic Republic may procure any necessary arms and equipment from any source without any legal restrictions, and solely based on its defensive needs, and may also export defensive armaments based on its own policies,\u201d the Foreign Ministry added.<\/p>\n<p>The statement made it clear that \u201cthe lifting of arms restrictions and the travel ban were designed to be automatic with no other action required.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Foreign Ministry said October 18 is \u201ca momentous day for the international community,\u201d praising the world for standing with Tehran \u201cin defiance of the US regime\u2019s efforts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The administration of US President Donald Trump suffered an\u00a0embarrassing loss on August 14 as it failed to renew the Iranian arms embargo through a resolution at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).<\/p>\n<p>Russia and China voted against the motion and the remaining 11 council members, including France, Germany and the UK, abstained.<\/p>\n<p>Following the humiliating failure, the United States vowed to use its \u201csecondary\u201d sanctions to block any arms trades with Tehran after\u00a0the expiry of the UN ban.<\/p>\n<p>US Special Representative for Venezuela and Iran Elliott Abrams claimed last month that Washington could deny access to the US market to anyone who trades in weapons with Tehran.<\/p>\n<p>Sanctions \u201cwill have a very significant impact\u201d on arms manufacturers and traders that seek to do business with Tehran, he told reporters.<\/p>\n<div data-oembed-url=\"https:\/\/www.presstv.com\/Detail\/2020\/09\/20\/634564\/Iran-US-Zarif-arms-embargo-europe\">\n<div class=\"oembed\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.presstv.com\/Photo\/2020\/9\/20\/5fec3d01-0a72-40e8-9a7c-c250c48c85b3.jpg\" alt=\"Iran says no need for European arms, will buy weapons from Russia, China\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"title\">Iran says no need for European arms, will buy weapons from Russia, China<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Iran\u2019s foreign minister says the country will meet its strategic needs by purchasing weapons from Russia and China, and has no need for European weapons once the UN embargo is lifted in October.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The US initiative is expected to prevent European companies from selling weapons and military equipment to Iran. However, Iran has made it clear that it will not need European weapons, as it is going to meet its strategic needs by purchasing weapons from China and Russia.<\/p>\n<p>Moscow said in September that it was ready to boost its military cooperation with Tehran, while Beijing has also spoken of its willingness to sell arms to Iran after October 18.<\/p>\n<p>However, Iran\u2019s Foreign Ministry spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh tweeted a few hours before the Sunday announcement that Iran meets 90 percent of its defense needs, and does not need to be dependent on other countries when it comes to arms supplies.<\/p>\n<p>It was also stipulated in the Sunday statement that \u201cunconventional arms, weapons of mass destruction and a buying spree of conventional arms have no place in Iran\u2019s Ministry<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Russia says it will ill consider military technical cooperation with Iran in line with mutual interests after the expiration of a United Nations arms embargo on Tehran.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Shortly after the announcement, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif tweeted that the international community had \u201cprotected\u201d the nuclear deal and Oct. 18 marked the \u201cnormalization of Iran\u2019s cooperation with the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday&#8217;s normalization of Iran\u2019s defense cooperation with the world is a win for the cause of multilateralism and peace and security in our region,\u201d Zarif said.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">A momentous day for the international community, the United Nations Majid Takht-Ravanchi also hailed the UN Security Council for rejecting all the US efforts to prevent the expiry of the arms embargo.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs of today, Iran\u2019s arms trade needs no prior consent from the UNSC,\u201d he tweeted.<\/p>\n<p>Iran\u2019s ambassador to international organizations in Vienna, Kazem Gharibabadi, also told\u00a0<em>IRNA<\/em>\u00a0that governments can no more cite sanctions as a pretext to prevent Iran\u2019s arms trade.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom now on, governments cannot refer to the existence of sanctions or internationally binding
