(Photo by Reuters)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Nigeria&#8217;s police have ordered the immediate mobilization of all resources to reclaim the streets,\u00a0which have become the scene of unprecedented<\/strong><strong>violence and looting, after police shot peaceful\u00a0protesters in Lagos earlier this week.<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The Inspector General of Police\u00a0Mohammed Adamu told the police force that &#8220;enough is enough&#8221; and ordered officers to &#8220;use all legitimate means to halt a further slide into lawlessness,\u201d the police force said in a tweet on Saturday.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Adamu &#8220;warns troublemakers not to test the collective will of the nation by coming out to cause any further breakdown of law and order,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n<p>Adamu also called on people to \u201cjoin forces with the police and other members of the law enforcement community to protect their communities from the criminal elements,\u201d the force said.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.presstv.com\/Photo\/2020\/10\/25\/b053fd5a-5277-4892-a6c1-065e8a2e10f0.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"555\" height=\"297\" \/><figcaption>People crowd at a market place, as Nigeria&#8217;s Lagos state eases a curfew on October 24, 2020. unarmed protesters during a round-clock curfew in the country&#8217;s biggest city, Lagos, on Tuesday, .<\/p>\n<p>Protesters had\u00a0called\u00a0for a police unit, the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (Sars), to be disbanded.<\/p>\n<p>The unit, accused of harassment, extortion, torture and extra-judicial killings, was dissolved by President Muhammadu Buhari days later, but the protests have continued\u00a0following reports that some members from the disbanded unit were hired for other roles.<\/p>\n<div target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Protesters paralyze Lagos, prompting authorities to impose an indefinite curfew in Nigeria<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Security forces killed at least 12 people on Tuesday, said Rights group Amnesty International, but Nigeria&#8217;s army has denied any involvement in the killings.<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, authorities imposed a round-the-clock curfew on millions of people in Lagos and several states.<\/p>\n<p>This prompted protest organizers to call on people on Friday to stay at home.<\/p>\n<p>President Buhari said on Friday that officials had recorded 69 fatalities and 37 injuries \u2014 mainly civilians, but also officers and soldiers \u2014 as a result of \u201chooliganism\u201d in recent weeks.<\/p>\n<p>Buhari had sparked harsh criticism for not mentioning Tuesday\u2019s killings in a national address Thursday, when he instead warned citizens against \u201cundermining national security.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He further escalated the violence by saying security forces had\u00a0exercised \u201cextreme restraint\u201d in handling the situation.<\/p>\n<p>His government insisted that the peaceful protests have been hijacked by this week that Washington \u201cmust stand with Nigerians who are peacefully demonstrating for police reform and seeking an end to corruption in their democracy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI urge President Buhari and the Nigerian military to cease the violent crackdown on protesters in Nigeria, which has already resulted in several deaths,\u201d Biden said Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>US\u00a0Secretary of State\u00a0Mike Pompeo also reacted to the violence in Nigeria, saying that the US \u201cstrongly condemns the use of excessive force by military forces who fired on unarmed demonstrators in Lagos.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Tuesday violence in Lagos has been the worst since Nigeria\u2019s return to civilian rule in 1999.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><a
