TEHRAN (FNA)- Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh blasted attacks on diplomatic and residential regions in Iraq as \u201cunacceptable\u201d, and strongly condemned US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s allegations about the Iraqi popular forces’ role and responsibility for the Sunday rocket attack on the US embassy in Baghdad.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cAttacks on diplomatic and residential places are not acceptable,\u201d Khatibzadeh told reporters in a press conference in Tehran on Monday after a Sunday night rocket attack on the US embassy compound in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, which was immediately followed by a US secretary of state’s statement that blamed the Iraqi popular forces close to Iran.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cBut the type and time of the attack and the statement issued by the US secretary of state which seems to have been prepared to be released (immediately after the attack) are all very suspicious,\u201d he added.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The US embassy in the Baghdad Green Zone was targeted in a rocket attack\u00a0on Sunday, according to early reports.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Iraqi security officials said on condition of anonymity that the embassy’s C-RAM defense system shot down the rockets mid-air causing damage to a residential complex and parked cars.\u00a0There were no reports of casualties.<\/strong><\/p>\n

“The US\u00a0Embassy confirms rockets targeting the International Zone (Green Zone) resulted in the engagement of embassy defensive systems,”\u00a0a statement released by the embassy said, adding that the compound suffered some minor damage.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Pompeo rushed to blame the Iraqi popular forces for the rocket attack on the US embassy in Baghdad.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Khatibzadeh “strongly” condemned Pompeo’s allegations, warning the US regime not to be after warmongering and tensions in the region.<\/strong><\/p>\n

“Certainly, the Iraqi government will seriously try to find the culprits behind the attacks in compliance with its responsibilties,” he added.<\/strong><\/p>\n
