One of the factors that sometimes leads a person to dare before Almighty God and commit sin, or to show little concern for repentance afterward, is belittling sin and disobedience. According to the word of Imam Sajjad, peace be upon him, one must seek refuge in God from the fear of falling into this spiritual state.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Hawzah News Agency<\/a>\u00a0| In the eighth supplication of\u00a0Sah\u012bfa Sajjadiyyah<\/em>, Imam Sajjad, peace be upon him, addresses Almighty God in these words:<\/p>\n

\u201cO God, I seek refuge in You from taking sin lightly.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Explanation:<\/strong><\/h3>\n

One of the reasons that may cause a person to show audacity before Almighty God and commit sin or to fail to give repentance is taking sin lightly. As Imam Sajjad peace be upon him teaches, a believer should seek refuge in God from the danger of viewing sin as something trivial.<\/p>\n

What makes the issue of belittling sin even more sensitive is that it is among\u00a0the criteria distinguishing a believer from a disbeliever<\/strong>. The Messenger of God, peace and blessings of God be upon him and his family, said in his counsel to Abu Dharr (One of the special companions of the Prophet):<\/p>\n

\u201cThe believer perceives his sin as a great rock hanging over him, fearing that it might fall upon him; while the disbeliever regards his sin as a mere fly passing before his nose.\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0(Makarim al-Akhlaq, v. 1, p. 458)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

<\/h3>\n

How Can We Be Freed from This kind of Sin?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

What can deliver a person from the sin of “taking sin lightly” is a change in perspective. The Holy Prophet, peace and blessings of God be upon him and his family, says:<\/p>\n

\u00ab\u0644\u0627\u064e \u062a\u064e\u0646\u0652\u0638\u064f\u0631\u064f\u0648\u0627 \u0625\u0650\u0644\u064e\u06cc \u0635\u0650\u063a\u064e\u0631\u0650 \u0627\u064e\u0644\u0630\u0651\u064e\u0646\u0652\u0628\u0650 \u0648\u064e \u0644\u064e\u06a9\u0650\u0646 \u0627\u064f\u0646\u0652\u0638\u064f\u0631\u064f\u0648\u0627 \u0625\u0650\u0644\u064e\u06cc \u0645\u064e\u0646\u0650 \u0627\u0650\u062c\u0652\u062a\u064e\u0631\u064e\u0623\u0652\u062a\u064f\u0645\u0652.\u00bb<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cDo not look at the smallness of the sin; rather, look at Him against Whom you have dared to commit it.\u201d\u00a0<\/strong>(Bihar al-Anwar, v. 74, p. 168)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Indeed, when one reflects on Whom he has disobeyed, he perceives even a seemingly small act of disobedience as a massive boulder weighing upon his head. This awareness arises from a sense of shame and modesty, because the Greatness and Majesty of the Creator whom one has defied makes the sin appear immense in his eyes.<\/p>\n

Truly, such is the mindset of a believer.<\/p>\n

<\/h3>\n

A Warning<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Neglecting to avoid taking sin lightly is precisely what Imam K\u0101zim, peace be upon him, warns us against. He says:<\/p>\n

\u201cDo not count the small sins as little, for small sins accumulate until they become many.\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0(Al- Kafi, v. 2, p. 287)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

For this reason\u2014as declared by the Prophet Muhammad peace and blessings of God be upon him and his family \u2014such negligence brings comfort to Satan:<\/p>\n
