Hadith Eight
\nThe Necessity of the Imam\u2019s Existence in Every Age
\nOn the authority of Sulaym\u0101n al-Ja\u2018far\u012b, who said:
\nI asked Abu al-Hasan al-Ridha (peace be upon him) and said: Can the earth be without Allah\u2019s proof?
\nHe said:
\nIf the earth were left without a proof even for the blink of an eye, it would sink together with its inhabitants. [11]\nI say: This hadith has been narrated from Sulaym\u0101n al-Ja\u2018far\u012b, Muhammad ibn al-Fudayl, Ahmad ibn \u2018Umar, al-Hasan ibn \u2018Ali al-Washsh\u0101\u2019, and al-Hasan ibn Kh\u0101lid, from al-Ridha (peace be upon him), with varying wordings.

\nHadith Nine
\nThat Imam al-Mahdi (peace be upon him) Will Have an Occultation
\nOn the authority of Zakariyya ibn Yahya ibn al-Nu\u2018m\u0101n al-Sayraf\u012b, who said:
\nI heard \u2018Ali ibn Ja\u2018far speaking to al-Hasan ibn al-Husayn ibn \u2018Ali ibn al-Husayn, and he said:
\nBy Allah, Allah has indeed granted victory to Abu al-Hasan al-Ridha (peace be upon him).
\nAl-Hasan said to him:
\nYes, by Allah, may I be ransomed for you. His brothers wronged him.
\n\u2018Ali ibn Ja\u2018far said:
\nYes, by Allah, and we\u2014his uncles\u2014also wronged him.
\nAl-Hasan said:
\nMay I be ransomed for you, how did you act? For I was not present with you.
\nHe said:
\nHis brothers, and we as well, said to him: There has never been an Imam among us with a dark complexion.
\nAl-Ridha (peace be upon him) said to them: He is my son.
\nThey said:
\nThe Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) has ruled according to physiognomy (al-q\u0101fah), so let there be physiognomists between us and you.
\nHe said:
\nSend for them yourselves. As for me, I will not do so. And do not inform them why you summoned them, and remain in your houses.
\nWhen they came, they seated us in the garden. His uncles, brothers, and sisters lined up. Al-Ridha (peace be upon him) was taken, dressed in a woolen cloak and a woolen cap, and a hoe was placed around his neck. They said to him: Enter the garden as though you are working in it.
\nThen they brought Abu Ja\u2018far (peace be upon him) and said:
\nAttach this boy to his father.
\nThey said:
\nHe has no father here. Rather, this is his paternal uncle, this is his paternal uncle, this is his uncle, and this is his aunt. If he has a father here, then he is the owner of the garden, for his feet and this man\u2019s feet are alike.
\nWhen Abu al-Hasan (peace be upon him) returned, they said:
\nThis is his father.
\n\u2018Ali ibn Ja\u2018far said:
\nSo the matter was settled. I then sucked the saliva of Abu Ja\u2018far (peace be upon him) and said to him:
\nI bear witness that you are my Imam before Allah.
\nAl-Ridha (peace be upon him) wept, then said:
\nRise, O uncle. Did you not hear my father say that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) said:
\n\u201cMay my father be ransomed for the son of the best of bondwomen, the son of the Nubian, pure of mouth, noble of womb. Woe be to them\u2014may Allah curse al-\u2018Ab\u012bs and his progeny\u2014the companions of tribulation. He will kill them for years, months, and days, subjecting them to humiliation and giving them a bitter cup to drink. He is the expelled, the fugitive, bereaved of his father and grandfather, the \u0635\u0627\u062d\u0628 \u0627\u0644\u063a\u064a\u0628\u0629 (one of occultation). It will be said: \u2018He has died\u2019 or \u2018He has perished\u2014into which valley has he gone?\u2019
\nO uncle, could this be anyone other than me?\u201d
