Otherwise, begin with the prayer, for two obligations have come upon you: breaking the fast and the prayer. Begin with the better of them, and the better of them is the prayer.”
Then he (peace be upon him) said:
“You pray while still fasting, and that prayer is recorded for you; then you conclude it with the fast—this is more beloved to me.”
And from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family):
“When one of you breaks his fast, let him break it with dates; if he does not find any, then with water, for water is purifying.”
Al-Ṣādiq (peace be upon him) used to begin his ifṭār with something sweet; if he did not find that, then with sugar or a few small dates; and if none of that was available, then with lukewarm water. He used to say:
“It cleanses the stomach, strengthens the eyesight and vision, washes away sins as water washes away dirt, calms the veins and excessive bile, cuts phlegm, extinguishes heat, and removes headache.”
And from al-Ṣādiq (peace be upon him):
“When a fasting person fasts, his eyes grow weak; and when he breaks his fast with something sweet, they return to their normal state.”
And know that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) strongly emphasized during this month the exhortation to fear Allah, to avoid envy and disputes, and that the fasting person should guard his stomach and private parts, and restrain his tongue. For it is a month that Allah has honored and preferred over all other months.
The gates of Paradise are opened, so ask your Lord not to close them upon you. The gates of Hell are closed, so ask your Lord not to open them for you. And the devils are chained, so ask your Lord not to let them have authority over you.”
And from al-Ṣādiq (peace be upon him):
“When the first night of the month of Ramadan arrives, Allah forgives whomever He wills among His servants.
