In the Footsteps of al-Husayn (peace be upon him)
\nDr. Ahmad Rasm al-Nafis
\nThe Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) was shedding tears. I said, \u201cO Messenger of Allah, may my father and mother be sacrificed for you, what is wrong?\u201d He said, \u201cGabriel came to me and informed me that my nation will kill this son of mine.\u201d I said, \u201cThis one?\u201d He replied, \u201cYes,\u201d and he brought me some red soil.\u201d (1) Narrated by al-Bayhaqi.
\nIn Al-Isabah (under the biography of Anas ibn al-Harith), al-Bukhari states in his Tarikh:
\n\u201cI heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) say: \u2018Indeed, this son of mine\u2019\u2014meaning al-Husayn\u2014\u2018will be killed in a land called Karbala. Whoever among you witnesses that should support him.\u2019\u201d
\nAnas ibn al-Harith later went out to Karbala and was killed there alongside al-Husayn (peace be upon him). (2)
\nIn Al-Sawa\u2018iq al-Muhriqah by Ibn Hajar al-Haytami, Ibn Sa\u2018d and al-Tabarani narrate from Aisha that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said:
\n\u201cGabriel informed me that my son al-Husayn will be killed after me in the land of al-Taff, and he brought me this soil and told me that it contains the place of his burial.\u201d (3)
\nAl-Baghawi narrates in his Mu\u2018jam, from the hadith of Anas, that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said:
\n\u201cThe Angel of Rain sought permission from his Lord to visit me, and he was granted permission. It was on the day of Umm Salama. The Messenger of Allah said, \u2018O Umm Salama, guard the door for us and let no one enter.\u2019 While she was at the door, al-Husayn entered and rushed toward the Messenger of Allah, who began kissing and embracing him. The angel said:
\n\u2018Do you love him?\u2019 He replied, \u2018Yes.\u2019 The angel said, \u2018Your nation will kill him. If you wish, I will show you the place where he will be killed.\u2019 So he showed him, and he brought soil from that land\u2014red earth. Umm Salama took it and placed it in her garment.\u201d
\nThabit said: \u201cWe used to say that it was Karbala.\u201d
\nIn the narration of al-Mulla and Ibn Ahmad in the additions to the Musnad, she said:
\n\u201cHe then handed me a handful of red soil and said: \u2018This is from the soil of the land where he will be killed. When it turns into blood, know that he has been killed.\u2019 Umm Salama said: \u2018I placed it in a bottle with me, and I would say: The day it turns to blood will be a great day.\u2019\u201d
\nIn another narration from her: \u201cI checked it on the day al-Husayn was killed, and it had turned into blood.\u201d (1)

\nIbn Kathir relates in his Tafsir, quoting al-Bayhaqi in Dala\u2019il al-Nubuwwah, from Hudhayfah ibn al-Yaman, who said:
\n\u201cI was holding the reins of the she-camel of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), leading it, while \u2018Ammar was driving it\u2014or I was driving it while \u2018Ammar was leading it\u2014until we reached al-\u2018Aqabah. There I saw twelve riders who intercepted him. I alerted the Messenger of Allah about them, and he shouted at them, so they fled.
\nThe Messenger of Allah then said to us, \u2018Did you recognize the people?\u2019 We said, \u2018No, O Messenger of Allah. They were veiled, but we recognized the mounts.\u2019 He said, \u2018These are the hypocrites until the Day of Resurrection. Do you know what they intended?\u2019 We said, \u2018No.\u2019 He said, \u2018They intended to crowd the Messenger of Allah and make him fall\u2026\u2019\u201d (1)
