In the Footsteps of Al-Husayn (peace be upon him)
\nDr. Ahmad Rassem Al-Nafis
\nThe one who said: \u201cI am Abu \u2018Abdullah; I killed him in Wadi al-Siba\u2018,\u201d and who openly admitted that his joining the son of the \u201cliver-eater\u201d was merely for worldly gain.
\nAs for Mu\u2018awiyah \u2014 the man of the \u201cshirt\u201d that became proverbial for false claims \u2014 we cite a passage from the sermon with which he inaugurated his ominous rule. Abu al-Faraj al-Isfahani narrated in Maqatil al-Talibiyyin:
\n\u201cWhen authority finally came to Mu\u2018awiyah, he proceeded until he camped at al-Nukhaylah. He gathered the people there and delivered a lengthy sermon before entering Kufa.\u201d
\nAmong the excerpts reported from it are:
\n\u201cNo nation differed after its Prophet except that the people of falsehood prevailed over the people of truth.\u201d
\nThen he regretted saying this and added:
\n\u201cExcept this nation, for indeed it is\u2026 it is\u2026\u201d
\nAnd he said:
\n\u201cIndeed, everything I promised al-Hasan ibn \u2018Ali beneath these two feet of mine, I will not fulfill.\u201d
\nAnd he declared:
\n\u201cBy Allah, I did not fight you so that you may pray, fast, perform pilgrimage, or give zakat \u2014 for indeed you already do so. Rather, I fought you to gain authority over you, and Allah has granted me that while you were unwilling.\u201d (1)
\nWere the \u201cson of the liver-eater\u201d and his chief minister, \u2018Amr ibn al-\u2018As, truly demanding retribution for the blood of \u2018Uthman, or was power their true objective? Can there remain any doubt, after reading the speeches of both men, about the nature of the claims raised by the rebellious faction and the true image of the apostate movement \u2014 which could not have achieved its aim had it not been for the negligence of some Muslims and the weakness of others?

\nThese were the real objectives: seizing power and \u201chumiliating the believers.\u201d They differed greatly from the propagandistic slogans: \u201cavenging the killers of \u2018Uthman.\u201d
\nB \u2013 The Methods of Conspiracy Against the People
\nAs for the means employed by the \u201cson of the liver-eater\u201d to achieve his satanic goal (namely, establishing a government of those who appeared in the Prophet\u2019s vision as \u201cmonkeys,\u201d in opposition to the government of divine justice), they were of the same nature. Among the examples are the following:
\nFirst: Bribery and the lure of positions
\nConsider the following example:
\nMu\u2018awiyah attempted to bribe Qays ibn Sa\u2018d ibn \u2018Ubadah, the governor of Egypt appointed by Imam \u2018Ali. He wrote to him:
\n\u201c\u2026If you are able, O Qays, to be among those who seek vengeance for the blood of \u2018Uthman, then do so. Join us in our cause, and you shall have authority over the two Iraqs once victory is achieved, so long as you live. And for whomever you wish among your household, there shall be authority over the Hijaz for as long as my rule endures. Ask me for anything else you desire, for you shall not ask me for anything except that it will be granted to you.\u201d (1)
\nAs for the response of Qays ibn Sa\u2018d ibn \u2018Ubadah \u2014 may Allah be pleased with him \u2014 to the \u201cson of the liver-eater,\u201d it was a silencing reply. He wrote:
\n\u201cIn the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
\nFrom Qays ibn Sa\u2018d to Mu\u2018awiyah ibn Abi Sufyan.
\nAs for what follows: Indeed, it is astonishing\u2026\u201d
