It also consists in the belief that the Awaited Mahdi, whom the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) gave glad tidings of, is Muhammad ibn al\u2011Hasan al\u2011\u02bfAskari (peace be upon them both), born in the year 255 AH; and that he entered into occultation by the command of God\u2014two occultations:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8211; A **Minor Occultation**, during which he had four deputies through whom his news and directives were known. The last of them died in 329 AH. <\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>&#8211; With his death began the **Major Occultation**, during which his direct communication ceased.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>He instructed his Shi\u02bfa during the Major Occultation to refer to the narrators of traditions\u2014the just jurists\u2014concerning newly occurring matters. It is narrated from him (peace be upon him) that he said:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>&gt; \u201cAs for the newly occurring events, refer in them to the narrators of our traditions, for they are my proof over you, and I am God\u2019s proof.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>He also instructed them\u2014as his forefathers had instructed before him\u2014to await relief through his reappearance at the end of time, alongside Jesus (peace be upon him), so that God may establish through them, and at their hands, the most magnificent era awaited by the believers.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>&gt; \u201cAnd We have already written in the Psalms after the Reminder that the earth shall be inherited by My righteous servants.\u201d (Qur\u2019an 21:105) <\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>&gt; \u201cAnd there is none from the People of the Book but that he will surely believe in him before his death; and on the Day of Resurrection he will be a witness against them.\u201d (Qur\u2019an 4:159)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>This concept also entails loyalty to these divine proofs and dissociation from their enemies\u2014especially those who opposed them and displaced them from the station and rank which God and His Messenger had assigned to them.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>In contrast to this specific concept of Shi\u02bfism, there exists a general concept adopted by Ahl al\u2011Sunnah, by which they meant preferring \u02bfAli (peace be upon him) over \u02bfUthman, or preferring \u02bfAli (peace be upon him) over Abu Bakr and \u02bfUmar. They described this form of Shi\u02bfism as a \u201cminor innovation,\u201d and the second type of it as \u201cextreme Shi\u02bfism.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>As for the specific concept, they called it **\u201cRaf\u1e0d\u201d (Rejection)** and the \u201cmajor innovation,\u201d and they referred to its adherents as **R\u0101fi\u1e0dah (Rejecters)**. They dismissed reliance upon their narrations on the claim that the R\u0101fi\u1e0dah diminish the status of Abu Bakr and \u02bfUmar (i.e., lower their rank). <\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>(See *M\u012bz\u0101n al\u2011I\u02bftid\u0101l* by al\u2011Dhahabi, entry on Ab\u0101n ibn Taghlib; and the introduction to *Tahdh\u012bb al\u2011Tahdh\u012bb* by Ibn \u1e24ajar.)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8212;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>(9)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>This state does not cease except with the appearance of the Mahdi, Muhammad ibn al\u2011Hasan al\u2011\u02bfAskari (may God hasten his relief), supported by divine proofs and confirming the mission of his forefathers (peace be upon them) and their Shi\u02bfa.
