Thus I developed a hatred for Islam within myself. The image that formed in my mind about it was that it was nothing more than myths and falsehoods brought by a man from the Arabian Peninsula named Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him and his family).

As for the Qur’an—the book they claim to be heavenly and sacred—my father used to say that it was written and composed by Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) himself and falsely attributed to God, Glorified and Exalted be He. I believe that most Christians share this belief.

But divine destiny willed that the mercy of the Compassionate Lord should include me. I came to Iran after the victory of the blessed Islamic Revolution, and this divine light that shone upon the land of Iran touched me as well—through the hands of the divine reformer of the twentieth century, Imam Khomeini (may God sanctify his soul). The religious awakening it produced, and the genuine Islamic truths and knowledge that this miraculous revolution revealed, became the cause of my return to my innate nature and my reason.

When I came to Iran and became separated from my family, I found a good opportunity to research and read about some Islamic religious matters. I also met many Iraqi Muslims in Iran, and discussions would often arise between us about Islam and Christianity. These discussions rarely ended calmly. They would raise objections and questions about Christianity that I was unable to answer and that left me confused.

Nevertheless, I would claim that all these objections had answers, and that Christian scholars and church fathers were the ones capable of answering them. They would often emphasize that the Christian beliefs I presented were contradictory and irrational—such as sonship, incarnation, and the Trinity. I would reply that these beliefs were mysteries of Christianity that could only be understood by a Christian filled with the Holy Spirit.

I continued reading about Islamic beliefs. Among the books I felt a strong desire to read was the Holy Qur’an, especially after I learned that this sacred book contains many verses about Jesus Christ (peace be upon him) and his mother, the Virgin Mary (peace be upon her).

I began reading the heavenly book—the Qur’an—particularly the verses concerning Jesus Christ (peace be upon him) and his mother, the Virgin (peace be upon her). I was amazed by the great qualities with which the Qur’an describes Christ and his mother. I could hardly believe it, because I had previously thought—as I mentioned—that Muslims insulted Christ and his mother (peace be upon them). But I found exactly the opposite. The Qur’anic verses that speak about them mention them with great reverence and dignity.

I also looked for the verses that discuss other Christian doctrines such as the Trinity, sonship, crucifixion, atonement, and others. I saw the strong arguments that the Qur’an presents against them. In truth, after these readings I began to feel within myself an inclination toward the ideas and beliefs presented by Islam.

(12)

However, I kept this feeling hidden within me. As much as possible, during my meetings with Muslims I would ask about the doubts that occurred to me—but in a way that would not reveal this inner inclination.

As the days passed, the more I read and researched, the stronger this inclination became. I began to live in anxiety and felt an internal struggle, yet I did not know what to do.

One day I heard a scholar speaking about the guidance of a human being and the obstacles to it. He recited a Qur’anic verse that shook me to my core, as if it were speaking directly about my own condition. It was the saying of God:

“Give glad tidings to My servants—those who listen to what is said and follow the best of it.”
(Qur’an 39:17–18)

After that, the struggle within me intensified. Anxiety and agitation took hold of me. I began to feel that my mind was surrendering to the arguments and evidence presented by Islam. I also felt that these Islamic beliefs were closer to my innate nature than the beliefs of my fathers and forefathers.

My heart also changed. After living closely with practicing Muslims, I discovered their love and reverence for Jesus Christ and his mother, the Virgin (peace be upon them), especially through discussions. They never mentioned Christ or his mother without adding the phrase “peace be upon him” or “peace be upon her.”

They would also mention sayings reported from the Prophet of Islam and the Imams of the religion praising and honoring Christ and his mother (peace be upon them). All of this gradually transformed that hatred and resentment into affection and familiarity.

(13)

I began living with a mixture of joy and fear. I do not exaggerate when I say that a real battle was taking place deep within me—between the soldiers of the Most Merciful and the soldiers of Satan.

The soldiers of the Most Merciful were urging me to surrender to the call of my innate nature and reason and to follow the truth that had become clear to me. On the other hand, the soldiers of Satan whispered: How can you abandon the religion of your fathers and forefathers? Were they all truly mistaken and unaware of the truths that you have discovered? And what about your family—will you be able to convince them of this truth? Would they accept you if they knew you had abandoned their religion and embraced Islam, especially when you know the intense hostility and hatred they feel toward Islam?

All these whispers lived in my heart and stood as barriers preventing me from submitting to the truth.

This internal battle intensified so much that I remember for three days I had no appetite for food or drink. I ate only when hunger became unbearable. I also suffered from insomnia during that period. I lost the ability to make a decision—especially since I was still a young man, and making such a life‑changing decision under those circumstances seemed almost impossible.

One night I began to pray earnestly to my Lord and Creator, crying sincerely and asking Him for help to deliver me from this struggle, confusion, and anxiety that had exhausted me.

The next morning I felt within myself a great strength I had never experienced before. I felt a remarkable expansion in my chest that shattered all the barriers and whispers that Satan had placed in the path of my guidance.

With complete calmness and certainty, I made the most difficult decision of my life: I decided to embrace Islam, follow the path of truth, and leave the traditional religion of my fathers and forefathers. Thus my new life began with this blessed rebirth.

(14)

After that, I devoted many years to careful and intensive research and study—seeking to deepen my understanding of the principles and branches of Islam, its teachings, and its laws. At the same time, I studied my previous religion with even greater scrutiny. I compared the two in terms of beliefs and teachings.

I found the truth clear and evident like the light of the sun. I became certain that the belief I had previously held—Christianity—contained contradictions that reason could not accept, even though we used to consider them “mysteries” beyond the reach of reason, such as the Trinity, sonship, incarnation, and similar doctrines.

In contrast, I found that Islam bases all its beliefs on rational evidence—especially the fundamental principle upon which it stands: **monotheism (tawḥīd)**. Within it are profound divine insights that, when understood, allow a person to live a truly monotheistic and fulfilling life in this world before the Hereafter.

I believe that fanaticism, ignorance, following one’s desires, and heedlessness are the factors… (15)

…to turn it off so that we would not listen to it.
