A society that ought to be strong and economically independent—capable of meeting the needs of its people—thus turns into nothing more than a market generating profits for those unjust states. When we become such a society, those powers dominate us and impose upon us whatever decisions they wish, through blackmail, threats of starvation, and deprivation.

Imam Khamenei, may his shadow endure, warns of the danger of this situation:

> “Among the factors that prevent the capable from extending a helping hand to the poor is the spread of consumerism and extravagance in society. Woe to a society in which the tendency toward consumption increases day after day, such that everyone is encouraged toward excessive consumption, variety, and abundance in food, drink, clothing, the pursuit of fashions, and every new luxury of life. How much wealth and money are wasted in this direction—wealth that could have been spent in ways that lead to God’s pleasure and in solving the problems of segments of society.
>
> The inclination toward consumerism is a great calamity for society. Extravagance deepens and widens the gap between rich and poor day after day. One of the duties that the people must consider incumbent upon themselves is avoiding waste. The responsible institutions of the state—especially the media and cultural institutions, particularly radio and television—must regard it as their duty not only to refrain from pushing the masses toward extravagance, consumerism, and ostentation, but rather to guide them in the opposite direction: toward contentment, sufficiency, spending according to need, and avoiding excess and waste. The spirit of consumerism destroys society.
>
> A society whose consumption exceeds its production will face defeat. We must accustom ourselves to balancing and limiting our consumption and abandoning extravagance. Young people should take the initiative in organizing family gatherings, collecting contributions from family members, and spending them first on the poor and needy within their own families, or on other poor people if there is no such need.
>
> We hope that the Lord of the worlds grants us and the Islamic nations vigilance and inspires officials in Islamic countries to fulfill their great responsibilities.”

Reference:
7. Cultural Domination

There is no doubt that the media are among the most important tools used by arrogant powers in their assault and attempt to impose cultural domination over other nations. Cultural domination is extremely dangerous; it is more strategic and deeper than political and military occupation, and it reinforces them. This is what the Leader of the Muslims, Imam Khamenei, may his shadow endure, warns against. In this regard, he emphasizes several key points:

—

## A. Undermining Morale

This is done by stripping society of its self-confidence and portraying it as incapable of competing with major powers—especially in scientific, technological, and economic fields.

He says:

> “The arrogant powers of the world constantly call upon us Muslims, through their media outlets, to recognize the ‘realities’ of the world—meaning that the Western world is advanced and powerful scientifically, technologically, economically, and militarily, and that we have no option but surrender and retreat.”

Reference:
8. Meeting of the Leader of the Islamic Revolution with members of the Islamic Consultative Assembly — 26 Rabiʿ al‑Awwal 1424 AH, Tehran.

—

## B. Spreading Propaganda Mouthpieces Within the Nation

One matter that must not be overlooked is the presence of certain individuals who present themselves as people of culture and awareness, yet play a destructive role in shaking the nation’s confidence in itself and its capabilities. Whether intentionally or unintentionally, they contribute to a plan aimed at dominating the political decision-making and cultural heritage of nations.

Imam Khamenei, may his shadow endure, refers to them as those warned about in the Qur’an, described as *“al‑murjifūn”* (those who spread rumors and alarm). God Almighty says:

> “If the hypocrites and those in whose hearts is disease and those who spread rumors in the city do not desist, We will surely incite you against them; then they will not remain your neighbors therein except for a little while. Accursed wherever they are found, they shall be seized and killed utterly.”
> *(Surah al‑Ahzab 33:60–61)*

He states:

> “The efforts of political currents opposed to the Islamic Republic and to the great Islamic awakening undertaken by the Iranian people and the peoples of the region have focused on stirring anxiety and fear in hearts. This is a general policy of today’s media empire. It is not new—neither over the past twenty-five years for us nor throughout the history of Islam from its beginning until today.
>
> That is why one of the negative themes emphasized in the Qur’an is that of the ‘rumor-mongers’—those who seek to sow anxiety and doubt in hearts. The Qur’an says: ‘Those to whom people said: Indeed, the people have gathered against you, so fear them’—they would create uproar in the city of the Prophet, claiming that enemies had gathered to destroy and annihilate you. Yet the believers responded as the verse states: ‘It increased them in faith, and they said: Sufficient for us is Allah, and He is the best disposer of affairs.’
>
> In such circumstances, believers remain tranquil in the face of the enemy’s psychological and media warfare. This is the ‘tranquility’ (sakīnah) that God sends down into the hearts of believers so that their faith increases.
>
> In conditions of fear and anxiety, even firm convictions may fade from memory. Fear paralyzes both reason and determination. A frightened person cannot think correctly nor act with resolve. That is why the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) advised Imam Ali (peace be upon him): ‘Do not consult a coward, for he narrows the path before you.’ Tranquility is therefore of utmost importance.”

Reference:
10. Meeting with members of the Islamic Consultative Assembly — 26 Rabiʿ al‑Awwal 1424 AH, Tehran.

—

## C. Promoting Misleading Slogans

Among the key methods used by media to dominate the Islamic nation is the promotion of misleading slogans by Western propaganda outlets, often supported by hired writers. These slogans—such as democracy, freedom, and human rights—are used selectively for their own interests, even though those promoting them are among the foremost violators.

Imam Khamenei, may his shadow endure, says:

> “They speak of democracy as a slogan, repeating it again and again. This is the policy of global propaganda: talk, repetition, and constant reiteration until it influences some people or at least becomes familiar to them.
>
> Yet they have nothing to do with popular sovereignty. Many regimes that enjoy their friendship do not recognize the meaning of the people’s vote at all, and their peoples have no experience of electing their officials—yet no objection is raised against them.
>
> When they accuse the Islamic Republic—despite its many elections, popular participation, and manifestations of popular sovereignty rarely found elsewhere—of lacking democracy and being dictatorial, it becomes clear what they truly seek. Their issue is neither democracy nor weapons of mass destruction. They themselves have filled the region with weapons. Look at the Zionist regime as a complete example. They supported Saddam’s regime, helped him build long-range missiles and chemical capabilities, even as dictatorship prevailed in Iraq.”

Reference:
11.
