Therefore, starting on **8 October**, Hezbollah began exchanging fire with Israeli military positions, and its fighters were falling as martyrs on a daily basis.

The Israelis did not remain idle. They responded with artillery shelling, in addition to assassinating Hezbollah leaders inside Lebanon and in Syria, and striking Hezbollah positions. The exchange of fire between the two sides led to the displacement of large numbers of Hezbollah’s Shiite social base from southern Lebanon, as well as the displacement of many Israeli settlers from the settlements in the Galilee in the north of the occupied territories.

The conflict between Israel and Hezbollah escalated as Hezbollah began using rockets in its operations against Israeli positions, while Israel relied heavily on air power to bombard areas in southern Lebanon.

After Israeli forces entered Gaza, displaced its population, destroyed much of its infrastructure, and severely weakened the military capability of Hamas’s armed wing, Israel began preparing for a comprehensive war against Hezbollah. The campaign began on the intelligence front, accompanied by intensified aerial and artillery bombardment. Communication devices used by Hezbollah supporters were reportedly targeted and exploded, resulting in thousands of casualties between the dead and the wounded.

Israel also continued targeting Hezbollah’s leadership. When Hezbollah fighters carried out a drone strike on the residence of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu—and earlier targeted a meeting of Israeli leadership figures with another drone, revealing what supporters described as significant intelligence capabilities—Israel responded with a larger strike. In that operation, Hezbollah’s Secretary‑General **Sayyid Hassan Nasrallah** was assassinated. This was followed by the killing of **Sayyid Hashim Safi al‑Din**, who had been widely seen as a potential successor in the party’s leadership.

At the same time, Israeli ground forces attempted to advance into southern Lebanon, but they faced strong resistance that prevented them from achieving the objectives they sought.

Hezbollah fighters, according to this account, carried out intense and determined operations in confronting the Israeli offensive, despite the significant disparity in military resources and capabilities.

For the Lebanese resistance, the war in southern Lebanon gradually turned into a **war of attrition**. The Israeli military continued striking infrastructure in areas considered part of Hezbollah’s support base through sustained air operations, and southern Lebanon experienced widespread destruction and displacement reminiscent of what had occurred in Gaza. Continuing the war under such conditions became extremely difficult.

At the same time, Israeli leaders recognized that further progress in the ground war against Hezbollah was also unlikely. Despite its considerable military capabilities, the Israeli army achieved only limited territorial gains after two months of ground operations. Hezbollah fighters continued to resist, and their actions significantly hindered Israeli advances.

Meanwhile, Hezbollah’s rockets continued to be launched, and **Tel Aviv** itself became a target, disrupting daily life there. As a result, Israel’s political leadership decided to halt the war in southern Lebanon through a **ceasefire agreement lasting sixty days** between the two sides.

**Episode Four – Al‑Aqsa Flood and Hezbollah** **Hezbollah and the Events of October** From the beginning of the operation of **7 October**, Hezbollah announced its position in support of Hamas in accordance with what the situation required.
