They will be unable to comply, either because their physical health has been stripped away or because the trait of arrogance has become deeply rooted in their inner selves.

**C: “*And they used to be invited to prostration while they were sound*”**
The meaning is that when they were invited to prostrate in the worldly life, they refused despite the health of their bodies. These same people are invited to prostrate in the Hereafter but find themselves unable to do so, solely to heighten their anguish and remorse over what they neglected.

##### **4. The Fourth Verse**
“*And you will never be able to be [perfectly] just between wives, even if you should strive [to do so]. So do not incline completely [toward one] and leave another hanging. And if you amend [your affairs] and fear Allah – then indeed, Allah is ever Forgiving and Merciful.*” (4:129)

Sheikh al-Ash‘ari used this verse to support his aim regarding the permissibility of obligation beyond capacity. He argued: “God Almighty commanded justice, yet He simultaneously informed [us] of the inability to be just.”

**I say:** There is no doubt that God, the Exalted, commanded anyone who marries more than one wife to exercise justice between them, saying: “*But if you fear that you will not be just, then [marry only] one.*” (4:3) At the same time, He clarified in another verse that exercising [absolute] justice between them is beyond human power. Nevertheless, He forbade inclining [entirely] toward one and turning away from the other, such that she is left “hanging”—neither married nor divorced.

Upon contemplating the verse, it becomes clear that the “justice” commanded is different from the “justice” God stated man is unable to perform.
* **The possible (attainable) justice:** This is what every man married to more than one wife is capable of, such as justice in clothing, food, housing, and other marital rights that fall upon the husband and are performed through physical actions (*jawāriḥ*), having no connection to his inner heart.
* **The impossible justice:** This refers to equality in the distribution of love between them. The motive for love is the conscience and emotional inclination, which a person does not own and is not within the scope of his choice, as it is subject to factors outside of his control.

#### **Manifestations of Divine Justice in the Execution of Punishments**
It has been previously mentioned that God’s justice has manifestations in creation (*takwīn*) and legislation (*tashrī‘*). One manifestation of His justice in legislation is that He does not equate the obedient with the disobedient, the Muslim with the criminal, or the believer with the corruptor.

Therefore, the Day of Resurrection became a manifestation of His justice; if it were not for that promised day, His justice would not be manifest in the realm of recompense. Thus, the Day of Resurrection became an inevitable necessity for the manifestation of His justice. Many verses point to this concept:

1. “*Or should we treat those who believe and do righteous deeds like corruptors in the land? Or should we treat those who fear Allah like the wicked?*” (38:28)
2. “*Then will we treat the Muslims like the criminals? What is [the matter] with you? How do you judge?*” (68:35–36)

These two verses prove that treating the two groups equally is contrary to justice; thus, it is necessary to establish a distinction. Since both groups are often dealt with in this world in a similar manner [outwardly], this distinction must be realized on a certain day—and that is none other than the Day of Resurrection. This is expressed in His saying:
“*To Him is your return all together. [It is] the promise of Allah which is true. Indeed, He begins creation and then repeats it that He may reward those who have believed and done righteous deeds in justice; and those who disbelieved will have a drink of scalding water and a painful punishment because they used to disbelieve.*” (10:4)

Furthermore, the Exalted realizes His justice on the Day of Resurrection by setting up the scales of justice to recompense every soul for what it earned. He says:
“*And We place the scales of justice for the Day of Resurrection, so no soul will be treated unjustly in the least. And if there is [even] the weight of a mustard seed, We will bring it forth. And sufficient are We as accountant.*” (21:47)

And:
“*And the weighing [of deeds] that Day will be the truth. So those whose scales are heavy – it is they who will be the successful. And those whose scales are light – they are the ones who will lose themselves for what they used to do of injustice to Our verses.*” (7:8–9)

This is a brief overview to illustrate the manifestations of His justice in various fields. One who examines the verses of the Noble Qur’an will find many more verses regarding the justice of the Exalted.

—

### **Terminological Notes:**
* **كالمعلقة**: *Hanging* (or *in suspense*).
