So travel through the earth and observe how was the end of the deniers.” (Quran 16:36)

**The Tradition:**
**89. Al-Kafi, from al-Zuhri:** Men from the Quraysh entered upon Ali ibn al-Husayn (peace be upon them both) and asked him: “How is the call to the religion?” He said: “You say: ‘In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. I call you to Allah—Glorified and Exalted be He—and to His religion.’ Its core consists of two things: The first is knowledge of Allah—Glorified and Exalted be He—and the second is acting in accordance with His pleasure.
“The knowledge of Allah—Glorified and Exalted be He—is to know Him by His Oneness, Compassion, Mercy, Might, Knowledge, Power, and Exaltation above all things. [To know] that He is the Beneficent, the Harmful, the All-Dominant over all things; the One whom visions cannot grasp, while He grasps [all] visions; and He is the Subtle, the Acquainted. And [to know] that Muhammad is His servant and messenger, that what he brought is the Truth from Allah—Glorified and Exalted be He—and that whatever is other than it is falsehood. If they respond to this, then they have the same rights as the Muslims and the same obligations as the Muslims.”

—

### 3/6: The Call to Faith in Prophethood

**The Book:**
* “And they did not appraise Allah with true appraisal when they said, ‘Allah did not reveal to a human anything’…” (Quran 6:91)

**The Traditions:**
**90. Imam al-Sadiq (peace be upon him):** — In response to the skeptic who asked him, “From where did you prove the existence of Prophets and Messengers?” — “When we established that we have a Creator and Maker, Exalted above us and above all that He created, and [since] that Maker is Wise and Exalted, it is not permissible for His creation to witness Him, nor to touch Him, nor for Him to confront them directly and they confront Him, nor to debate them and they debate Him. [Therefore,] it was established that He has envoys among His creation who speak on His behalf to His creation and His servants, who guide them to their benefits and interests, and to that by which their survival is maintained and by which their abandonment would lead to their annihilation.
“Thus, those who command and forbid on behalf of the Wise, the Knowing, in His creation—and who express His Will—are established. They are the Prophets (peace be upon them), His chosen ones from His creation, wise men, disciplined by wisdom, sent with it, and not sharing with people—despite their shared creation and composition—in any of their [mundane] states; [rather], they are supported by the Wise, the Knowing, with wisdom.”

**91. Imam al-Rida (peace be upon him):** — Regarding the reason for the obligation of knowing the Messengers, acknowledging them, and submitting to their obedience — “Because when there was not in [human] creation and their powers that which would complete their interests, and the Maker was Exalted above being seen, and their weakness and inability to perceive Him were evident; there had to be a Messenger between Him and them, infallible, who conveys to them His command, His prohibition, and His discipline, and alerts them to that by which they may attain their benefits and repel their harms, since there was not in their creation that which would allow them to know what they need of their benefits and harms.
“If it were not obligatory upon them to know him and obey him, there would have been no benefit in the coming of the Messenger, nor would it have fulfilled any need. His coming would have been in vain, without benefit or reform, and this is not a trait of the Wise One who perfected everything.”

—

### 3/7: The Call to Faith in the Resurrection (*Ma’ad*)

**The Book:**
* “Did you think that We created you in vain and that to Us you would not be returned?” (Quran 23:115)

**The Traditions:**
**92. Luqman (peace be upon him):** — Advising his son — “O my son, if you are in doubt about death, then withhold sleep from yourself; you will not be able to do so. And if you are in doubt about the Resurrection, then withhold wakefulness from yourself; you will not be able to do so.”

**93. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family):** “O sons of Abd al-Muttalib, indeed the scout does not lie to his people. By the One who sent me with the Truth, you shall surely die just as you sleep, and you shall surely be resurrected just as you awaken. There is no abode after death except Paradise or Hell. The creation of all creatures and their resurrection for Allah—Glorified and Exalted be He—is like the creation of a single soul and its resurrection. Allah the Almighty says: ‘Your creation and your resurrection will not be but as that of a single soul.'” (Quran 31:28)

—

### 3/8: The Call to Unity and Avoiding Division

**The Book:**
* “Indeed this, your religion, is one religion, and I am your Lord, so worship Me.” (Quran 21:92)
* “And hold firmly to the rope of Allah all together and do not become divided. And remember the favor of Allah upon you – when you were enemies and He brought your hearts together and you became, by His favor, brothers…” (Quran 3:103)

**The Traditions:**
**95. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family):** “No nation has ever differed after its Prophet, except that the people of its falsehood overcame the people of its truth.”

**97. Imam Ali (peace be upon him):** “Beware of the punishments that befell the nations before you due to evil deeds and reprehensible actions. Reflect on their states, in both good and evil, and beware of becoming like them… Hold fast to every matter that brought honor to their affairs, kept enemies away, extended well-being over them, ensured blessings accompanied them, and connected the bond of dignity for them: avoiding division, clinging to unity, and encouraging and recommending it to one another. And avoid every matter that broke their spine and weakened their power: such as rancor in hearts, resentment in chests, turning away from one another, and failing one another…”

—

### 3/9: The Call to Upholding Justice (*Qist*)

**The Book:**
* “We have already sent Our messengers with clear evidences and sent down with them the Scripture and the balance that the people may maintain [their affairs] in justice…” (Quran 57:25)

**The Tradition:**
**99. Imam Ali (peace be upon him):** — Describing the People of Remembrance — “They enjoin justice and act upon it, and they forbid evil and abstain from it themselves.”

—

### 3/10: The Call to the Leadership of the Just Imam (*Wilayah*)

**The Book:**
* “O Messenger, announce that which has been revealed to you from your Lord, and if you do not, then you have not conveyed His message…” (Quran 5:67)
* “…This day I have perfected for you your religion and completed My favor upon you and have approved for you Islam as religion…” (Quran 5:3)

**The Traditions:**
**100. Imam al-Baqir (peace be upon him):** “Islam is built upon five things: Prayer, Zakat (charity), Fasting, Hajj (pilgrimage), and *Wilayah* (guardianship/leadership). And nothing has been called to as has been called to *Wilayah*.”

**101. Imam al-Baqir (peace be upon him):** [When asked which is best] “The *Wilayah* is the best, for it is the key to them, and the *Wali* (the guardian/leader) is the guide to them.”

—

### 3/11: The Call to Purposeful Freedom

**The Book:**
* “Say, ‘O People of the Scripture, come to a word that is equitable between us and you – that we will not worship except Allah and not associate anything with Him and not take one another as lords instead of Allah.’ But if they turn away, then say, ‘Bear witness that we are Muslims.'” (Quran 3:64)

**The Traditions:**
**104. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family):** — From his letter to the people of Najran — “I call you to the worship of Allah, away from the worship of servants [of God], and I call you to the *Wilayah* of Allah, away from the *Wilayah* of servants.”

**105. Imam Ali (peace be upon him):** “Indeed, Allah—Blessed and Exalted be He—sent Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family) with the Truth to bring His servants out from the worship of His servants to His worship, from the covenants of His servants to His covenants, from the obedience of His servants to His obedience, and from the *Wilayah* of His servants to His *Wilayah*.”

—

### 3/12: The Call to Recognizing the People of Truth by the Truth

**The Book:**
* “And similarly, We did not send before you any warner into a city except that its affluent said, ‘Indeed, we found our fathers upon a religion, and we are following in their footsteps.’ [The messenger] said, ‘Even if I brought you better guidance than that upon which you found your fathers?’…” (Quran 43:23-24)

**The Traditions:**
**111. Imam Ali (peace be upon him):** — To al-Harith al-Hamadani — “…The religion of Allah is not known by men, but rather by the sign of the Truth. Recognize the Truth, and you will know its people.”

**113. Imam Ali (peace be upon him):** — In his letter to the people of Egypt when appointing Malik al-Ashtar — “…Listen to him and obey his command in that which aligns with the Truth.”

—

### 3/13: The Call to Piety and God-consciousness (*Taqwa* and *Wara’*)

**The Book:**
* (Multiple verses citing Prophets Noah, Hud, Salih, Lot, and Shu’ayb calling their people:) “Will you not fear Allah (*taqqun*)?
