Pearl-oyster beds and habitats exist on the seabed of the Gulf, and UNESCO has documented the history of marine pearl fisheries in Bahrain. Historical sources also indicate that pearl oysters were widespread across large areas of the Gulf, including the Iranian side.

However, if the reference is specifically to mineral gemstones such as diamonds, rubies, emeralds, and sapphires existing in large quantities on the seabed of the Strait of Hormuz, I have not found a reliable geological source confirming this.

What actually exists?

There are three things that should be distinguished:

1. Natural Pearls 💎

This is historically well established. The Gulf was a global center for natural pearls, and some Iranian and Gulf regions were rich in pearl oysters. Sources indicate that some oysters on the Persian side produced large pearls, although the proportion of oysters containing valuable pearls was low.

2. Reefs and Oyster Beds on the Gulf Seabed

The Gulf is extremely shallow on average, at around 35 meters, and its seabed contains reefs and habitats for pearl oysters. Satellite images still show some of these ancient marine formations today.

3. Minerals and Sediments

The Hormuz region itself is exceptionally distinctive geologically as a result of the collision between the Arabian and Iranian tectonic plates, which has produced considerable diversity in the area’s rocks, sediments, and minerals.

But this does not automatically mean that there are massive deposits of precious gemstones on the seabed.

There is a possibility that the story you heard was referring to something else.

Perhaps what was meant was “Persian/Gulf pearls,” rather than gemstones in the geological sense.

This makes a great deal of sense, because natural pearls were once an enormous source of wealth for the Gulf. UNESCO describes the pearl trade as having shaped Bahrain’s economy for thousands of years, and Bahrain was a well-known global source of pearls before the traditional pearl trade collapsed in the 1930s due to the spread of Japanese cultured pearls.

Haydari Nazar 35 There is a real basis for this information, but it appears that there is some confusion between “precious gemstones” and “pearls.” The Gulf, particularly its shallow waters, was historically one of the world’s most famous regions for high-value natural pearls.
