Is there any other epic like this in the world?

Haydari Nazr

39

The Current Iranian Scene

The current Iranian scene is particularly striking from a historical perspective, especially if what is meant is the continuation of pro-state nighttime gatherings in multiple cities over a period of months, rather than a single demonstration.

The sources I reviewed confirm the existence of these nighttime gatherings since the beginning of the war in February 2026 and their continuation for a prolonged period. A report dated August 10, for example, spoke of 175 consecutive nights of people taking to the streets.

But there is an important point: politically speaking, the meaning of these gatherings is not entirely straightforward. Some reports say that some participants take to the streets out of a desire to defend Iran and reject foreign attacks, while others argue that the gatherings are not organized or supported by state institutions. Estimates of the number of participants also vary greatly, and there is no independent body capable of accurately counting millions of people every night.

Are there similar examples elsewhere in the world?

There have been historical cases of massive and repeated popular mobilization, but the continued appearance of large numbers of people in the streets night after night for such a long period, particularly under wartime conditions, makes the Iranian case unusual.

It can be partially compared with:

The Soviet Union during World War II: enormous popular mobilization, but it was primarily wartime mobilization rather than continuous nighttime political gatherings.

China during the Cultural Revolution: enormous and repeated crowds, but in a completely different political context.

Cuba during certain periods of the revolution: mass pro-government demonstrations, although they did not necessarily follow this pattern of continuous nightly gatherings.

Iran itself during the Iran-Iraq War: it witnessed enormous popular and military mobilization and is among the closest historical comparisons to the current situation.

As for Iran’s religious marches, such as the Arbaeen pilgrimage, they represent a much larger phenomenon in terms of scale, but they are religious rather than a direct measure of political support. On August 4, 2026, for example, Tehran witnessed a massive Arbaeen procession that extended for 13 kilometers.

What is most unusual about the current situation is not only the numbers, but the continuity.

When the streets become a space for sustained nighttime mobilization during wartime, it means that the state has been able to maintain a certain level of social and psychological mobilization over a prolonged period. Even political studies that do not support the Iranian government acknowledge that these gatherings have become one of the pillars of the regime’s ability to withstand the war.

Therefore, if you are asking: Has there been another state in modern history that faced war and external pressure while maintaining this kind of nightly popular mobilization? The answer is yes, there are precedents, but the current Iranian case is extremely rare in terms of its continuity and geographical spread.

Most importantly, however, this alone does not prove that the majority of the Iranian people support the government. It provides stronger evidence that there is a popular/national base capable of sustained mobilization, and that in itself is a strategically important phenomenon.

Haydari Nazr 39 The Current Iranian Scene The current Iranian scene is particularly striking from a historical perspective, especially if what is meant is the continuation of pro-state nighttime gatherings in multiple cities over a period of months, rather than a single demonstration.
