{"id":7396,"date":"2014-01-23T01:51:12","date_gmt":"2014-01-23T01:51:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wilayah.info\/en\/?p=7396"},"modified":"2020-10-30T14:00:12","modified_gmt":"2020-10-30T14:00:12","slug":"syria-peace-talks-kick-off-in-geneva-with-major-differences-expressed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wilayah.info\/en\/syria-peace-talks-kick-off-in-geneva-with-major-differences-expressed\/","title":{"rendered":"Syria peace talks kick off in Geneva with major differences expressed"},"content":{"rendered":"[youtube youtubeurl=&#8221;vWAryWEjlU0&#8243; ][\/youtube]\n<div id=\"divLead2\">\n<p><strong>The Geneva II conference on the Syria crisis has revealed major differences of opinion between the Syrian government and the foreign-backed opposition from the very outset.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The much-anticipated talks kicked off on Wednesday in the Swiss city of Montreux to discuss a transition plan ahead of direct talks between the opposition and the government in Geneva on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>But deep differences soon emerged with the opposition and its foreign sponsors insisting that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad must not have any role in the country\u2019s new government.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWe agree completely with Geneva I decisions that everyone has agreed upon. I invite partners to sign on Geneva I right now during their presence here and start a transition of Assad\u2019s power to a transitional body that will build the structure of new Syria,\u201d said Ahmad al-Jarba, head of the so-called Syrian National Coalition.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>He was referring to an earlier round of international talks on Syria held in Geneva in June 2012, where participants agreed on a transitional government with full executive powers with members from both the government and opposition.<\/p>\n<p>Jarba\u2019s remarks were echoed in comments made by US Secretary of State John Kerry, who insisted that there was no room for Assad in the future government of Syria.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is no way, no way possible in the imagination, that the man who has led the brutal response to his own people could regain the legitimacy to govern.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Muallem, however,\u00a0dismissed the remarks, noting, \u201cNo one in the world has the right to confer or withdraw the legitimacy of a president, a constitution or a law, except for the Syrians themselves. This is their right.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Muallem expressed regret that some countries attending the international conference \u201chave the blood of Syrian people on their hands.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Syrian foreign minister blamed them for \u201cexporting terrorism, as well as tools of murder\u201d and \u201cflooding media with lies\u201d to cover the crimes of the mercenaries and militants they have been funding in Syria.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov also called on all foreign players to \u201cabide by basic principles of international law: respect for Syria\u2019s sovereignty and not interfering in its internal affairs.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>He rejected the use of force in Syria and reiterated Russia\u2019s call for dialog among Syrian parties as the only solution to the crisis that has been plaguing the Arab nation over that past three years.<\/p>\n<p>Syria has been gripped by deadly crisis since March 2011, with Western powers and their regional allies &#8212; especially Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey &#8212; supporting the militants operating inside Syria.<\/p>\n<p>According to the United Nations, more than 100,000 people have been killed and millions displaced due to the violence.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>[youtube youtubeurl=&#8221;vWAryWEjlU0&#8243; ][\/youtube] The Geneva II conference on the Syria crisis has revealed major differences of opinion between the Syrian government and the foreign-backed opposition from the very outset.
