{"id":7527,"date":"2014-01-26T14:15:58","date_gmt":"2014-01-26T14:15:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wilayah.info\/en\/?p=7527"},"modified":"2014-01-26T14:16:34","modified_gmt":"2014-01-26T14:16:34","slug":"28-killed-in-fresh-wave-of-violence-in-iraq","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wilayah.info\/en\/28-killed-in-fresh-wave-of-violence-in-iraq\/","title":{"rendered":"28 killed in fresh wave of violence in Iraq"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/wilayah.info\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/safe_image.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-7529\" alt=\"safe_image\" src=\"http:\/\/wilayah.info\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/safe_image.jpg\" width=\"398\" height=\"207\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wilayah.info\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/safe_image.jpg 398w, https:\/\/wilayah.info\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/safe_image-300x156.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 398px) 100vw, 398px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Twenty-eight people have been killed in a fresh bout of violence in Iraq, with the latest mortalities taking the death toll for January to over 800.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>At least eight people, including a young child, were killed in a shelling that began late on Friday in Fallujah\u2019s southern neighborhood of Nazal and continued into the early hours of Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>Locals blame the army for the shelling, but defense officials have rejected the accusation.<\/p>\n<p>In the fresh wave of violence on Saturday, militants blew up a key bridge linking the capital, Baghdad, to the north.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, fighting is also raging on between al-Qaeda-linked militants and the army in the western province of Anbar, where security officials said 20 militants were killed near the provincial capital of Ramadi.<\/p>\n<p>Fallujah and parts of Ramadi have been in the center of heavy battles for weeks between government soldiers and militants from the al-Qaeda-linked Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).<\/p>\n<p>Fighting erupted in the Ramadi area on December 30, when security forces cleared a protest camp, which the government said was being used by militants for launching terrorist attacks.<\/p>\n<p>The removal of the camp sparked protests from Iraqi lawmakers who urged the army to leave the city.<\/p>\n<p>But the withdrawal of government forces from the city paved the way for ISIL militants to move in and seize the provincial capital and the neighboring city of Fallujah.<\/p>\n<p>On January 18, Iraq\u2019s Afaq TV aired confessions of a number of the ISIL militants admitting to have relations with and taking orders from Saudi Arabia.<\/p>\n<p>According to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), over 140,000 people have left their homes amid raging clashes in Anbar Province.<\/p>\n<p>Source: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.presstv.ir\/detail\/2014\/01\/25\/347752\/fresh-violence-kills-28-people-in-iraq\/\">Press TV<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Twenty-eight people have been killed in a fresh bout of violence in Iraq, with the latest mortalities taking the death toll for January to over 800.
