{"id":7718,"date":"2014-02-06T02:58:14","date_gmt":"2014-02-06T02:58:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wilayah.info\/en\/?p=7718"},"modified":"2014-02-06T02:58:14","modified_gmt":"2014-02-06T02:58:14","slug":"year-of-iran-challenge-to-american-hegemony-in-2014","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wilayah.info\/en\/year-of-iran-challenge-to-american-hegemony-in-2014\/","title":{"rendered":"Year of Iran: Challenge to American hegemony in 2014"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"divLead2\">\n<p><strong>Two prominent American university professors say in the year 2014 Iran will challenge the US hegemony in the Middle East and the world.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cThe Islamic Republic aims to replace American hegemony with a more multi-polar distribution of power and influence,\u201d Flynt Leverett and Hillary Mann Leverett wrote in an article.<\/p>\n<p>They referred to Iran\u2019s \u201cstrengths\u201d like its stable position in the Middle East and its \u201cindigenously generated political model integrating participatory politics and elections with principles and institutions of Islamic governance.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThese strengths have enabled the Islamic Republic to withstand sustained regional and Western pressure, and to pursue a foreign policy strategy likely to reap big payoffs in 2014,\u201d wrote the Leveretts, who are professors at the Pennsylvania State University School of International Affairs.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>They said former US President Jimmy Carter\u2019s \u201cdescription of Iran as an island of stability\u201d in the Middle East region still stands when compared to \u201cAfghanistan, Bahrain, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Palestine, Syria, and Tunisia.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Leveretts suggest that 2014 is another \u201cYear of Iran\u201d as Tehran is pursuing strategies to convince\u00a0the West to recognize Iran\u2019s right to a peaceful nuclear energy program.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThe West is increasingly challenged to come to terms with the Islamic Republic as an enduring entity representing legitimate national interests,\u201d they wrote.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>They noted that \u201cpartnering with Tehran\u201d would require the US and its allies in Britain and France \u201cto accept the Islamic Republic as the legitimate government of a fully sovereign state with legitimate interests.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Leveretts said \u201cmore US-instigated secondary sanctions that illegally threaten third countries doing business with Iran\u201d could not force the Islamic Republic to abandon its nuclear energy program.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRather, Iran\u2019s approach\u2026 seeks to make it easier for countries to rebuild and expand economic ties to the Islamic Republic even if Washington does not lift its own unilaterally-imposed sanctions,\u201d they wrote.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Two prominent American university professors say in the year 2014 Iran will challenge the US hegemony in the Middle East and the world. \u201cThe Islamic Republic aims to replace American hegemony with a more multi-polar distribution of power and influence,\u201d Flynt Leverett and Hillary Mann Leverett wrote in an article.
