{"id":8867,"date":"2014-05-05T11:14:14","date_gmt":"2014-05-05T11:14:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wilayah.info\/en\/?p=8867"},"modified":"2014-05-05T11:14:14","modified_gmt":"2014-05-05T11:14:14","slug":"tory-candidate-for-brentwood-south-resigns-after-tweeting-that-islam-was-the-religion-of-rape","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wilayah.info\/en\/tory-candidate-for-brentwood-south-resigns-after-tweeting-that-islam-was-the-religion-of-rape\/","title":{"rendered":"Tory candidate for Brentwood South resigns after tweeting that Islam was the &#8220;religion of rape&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"widget storyContent article widget-editable viziwyg-section-1024 inpage-widget-8939454 articleContent\">\n<p>\u00a0Conservative local election candidate who tweeted that it was good to be anti-Islam and that the Islam was the &#8220;religion of rape&#8221;, has had to resign just weeks after being chosen to represent the party in the Brentwood local elections.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"widget storyContent article widget-editable viziwyg-section-1024 inpage-widget-6138699 articleContent\">\n<div class=\"body \" data-twttr-id=\"twttr-sandbox-0\">\n<p>David Bishop, who was due to stand as the Conservative candidate for the ward of Brentwood South, Essex, later this month, resigned yesterday after local press discovered anti-Islamic and homophobic tweets on his twitter account.<\/p>\n<p>In a tweet posted just two days after being selected Bishop posted that Islam was the\u201d religion of peace\u2019 &amp; rape\u201d, after it was announced that four Muslim men had been arrested for the rape of a 14-year-old girl in Chesham, Buckinghamshire.<\/p>\n<p>Bishop also posted links to videos of the controversial comedian Pat Condell who has said in the past that Islam was a \u201creligion of war\u201d and that the prophet Muhammad had a \u201cpsychological disorder.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In addition to this, there were a number of homophobic messages including one that asked how a &#8220;gay guy could keep a straight face&#8221; and questioned the BBC\u2019s decision to broadcast a lesbian kiss before the watershed.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" lang=\"en\"><p>Four <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/search?q=%23Muslim&amp;src=hash\">#Muslim<\/a> men found guilty of sexual activity with a 14-year-old schoolgirl <a href=\"http:\/\/t.co\/KBusyoKgit\">http:\/\/t.co\/KBusyoKgit<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/search?q=%23Islam&amp;src=hash\">#Islam<\/a> &#8220;the religion of peace&#8221; &amp; rape.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 SorryI&#8217;llGetMyCoat (@woweegoodstuff) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/woweegoodstuff\/statuses\/460555338073112576\">April 27, 2014<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Initially, when questioned by The Brentwood Gazette about the tweets, Bishop has said that they had been posted to make such views look stupid.<\/p>\n<p>After standing down, however, he released a statement on the Brentwood and Ongar Conservative Association (BOCA) website that said that he \u201chad let the party down\u201d and that he would not be asking voters to not vote for him on May 22.<\/p>\n<p>He added: &#8220;I recognise that someone standing for public office should show leadership and seek to unite communities, not divide them. I hope the residents of Brentwood South can forgive my lack of judgement in time.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>This was followed by a statement, Louise McKinlay, group leader of Brentwood Conservatives, \u00a0which said that the views of Bishop had &#8220;no place in our team&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>She said: &#8220;David&#8217;s decision to step down was the right thing to do and I am pleased the party has backed this and accepted his resignation from the team and from the party.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>As of yet, no one has been named as replacement in the elections for the Conservative stronghold of Brentwood South, \u00a0which are set to take place in just three weeks\u2019 time.<\/p>\n<p>The news of Bishop\u2019s inflammatory comments comes on the day when UKIP announced that they would be suspending one of their election candidates after making similar comments on twitter.<\/p>\n<p>Harry Perry, who was seeking election in the Offerton ward in Stockport, was suspended by the party after tweeting that Islam was &#8220;evil&#8221; and homosexuality was an &#8220;abomination before god.\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Source: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/uk\/politics\/tory-candidate-for-brentwood-south-resigns-after-tweeting-that-islam-was-the-religion-of-rape-9321598.html\">The Independent\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0Conservative local election candidate who tweeted that it was good to be anti-Islam and that the Islam was the &#8220;religion of rape&#8221;, has had to resign just weeks after being chosen to represent the party in the Brentwood local elections.
