{"id":8917,"date":"2014-05-08T11:35:29","date_gmt":"2014-05-08T11:35:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wilayah.info\/en\/?p=8917"},"modified":"2014-05-10T22:03:05","modified_gmt":"2014-05-10T22:03:05","slug":"abu-hamza-admits-working-for-mi5","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wilayah.info\/en\/abu-hamza-admits-working-for-mi5\/","title":{"rendered":"Abu Hamza admits working for MI5"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"color: #222222;\"><strong>Abu Hamza al-Masri \u2013 who was once one of Britain\u2019s most infamous \u201cradical preachers\u201d \u2013 secretly worked for MI5, his lawyers have told a court in the US.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #222222;\">Abu Hamza\u2019s lawyers claimed the Egyptian-born preacher, who was giving evidence for the first time in his trial in New York, had been tasked to \u201ckeep the streets of London safe\u201d.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #222222;\">Giving evidence, the defendant, who was born Mustafa Kamel Mustafa, told his life story.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #222222;\">He told the court how he started \u201con the wrong side of morality\u201d, running a strip club in Soho, before becoming a devoted follower of Islam. He said he had been a member of the Royal Society of Engineers and had also worked at Sandhurst.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #222222;\">Then his lawyer told the judge, without the jury present, that Abu Hamza secretly worked for MI5 in London.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #222222;\">The defence wants to introduce as evidence documents from Scotland Yard, which it claims demonstrate how the preacher co-operated with police to calm tensions and to help release hostages in\u00a0<a style=\"color: #5c5c5c;\" title=\"Yemen\" href=\"http:\/\/www.5pillarz.com\/category\/world\/middle-east\/yemen\/\">Yemen<\/a>. But the judge has ruled the evidence inadmissible.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #222222;\">Abu Hamza was jailed in the UK for inciting murder and racial hatred with his sermons at Finsbury Park Mosque in north London, before being extradited to the US nearly two years ago. He faces life imprisonment in the US if found guilty of aiding terrorism.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #222222;\">US prosecutors allege that he provided a satellite phone and \u00a3500 worth of call time to help kidnappers in Yemen. He has pleaded not guilty.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #222222;\">He answered \u201cnever\u201d when asked if he had assisted the kidnapping of western tourists in Yemen in 1998 and set up a jihadist training camp in Oregon.
