\u202a<\/span>Hezbollah\u202c<\/span>\u00a0Secretary General Sayyid Hassan\u00a0\u202a\u200e<\/span>Nasrallah\u202c<\/span>\u00a0said that his party was willing to defend Shiite shrines in Iraq, after the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham overrun large areas of the country.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cWe will do whatever we are asked to do, and will go wherever we have to be\u2026\u201d a source close to Nasrallah quoted him on Tuesday as saying during his meeting with leaders of Imam al-Mahdi Scouts on the occasion of the twenty-ninth anniversary of the scouts formation.<\/span><\/p>\n

The source also noted that the remarks published for Nasrallah by As-\u202a<\/span>Safir\u202c<\/span>\u00a0newspaper earlier on Tuesday were \u201cjust a small part of what he said during the meeting.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are ready to sacrifice martyrs in Iraq five times more than what we sacrificed in Syria, in order to protect shrines, because they are much more important than [the holy sites in Syria],\u201d Nasrallah said.<\/p>\n

\u201cGone are the times when it was allowed to destroy and desecrate our religious shrines in\u00a0\u202a<\/span>Najaf\u202c<\/span>,\u00a0\u202a<\/span>Karbala\u202c<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0\u202a<\/span>Samarra\u202c<\/span>.<\/p>\n

\u201cHow will we face Imam al-Mahdi if the Samarra shrines were harmed?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n

However, he voiced his relief that \u201cas long as there is a man called Ayatollah\u00a0Khamenei\u202c<\/span>, [our] leader, and as long as there is a resistance, Iraqi people and religious clerics, nothing will happen to our shrines in the world.”<\/p>\n

The Hezbollah leader also called his supporters to refrain from shooting gunfire in the air during funerals of Hezbollah fighters.<\/p>\n

The source also noted that Nasrallah told the scout leaders that the appearance of Imam al-Mahdi was imminent.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are living today the era of the coming of Imam\u00a0\u200e<\/span>Mahdi\u202c<\/span>,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Faced with a militant offensive sweeping south toward Baghdad, Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki announced the Iraqi government would arm and equip civilians who volunteer to fight, and thousands have signed up.<\/p>\n

And on Friday, influential Islamic authority\u00a0 Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani issued a call to arms for people to fight \u201cterrorists,\u201d a move that will boost recruitment.<\/p>\n
