The Forty Hadiths of Imam al-Ridha about Imam al-Mahdi (peace be upon him) – 2
(He, peace be upon him, said:)
It is possible that the narrations prohibiting (the mention of his name) were issued because of the Minor Occultation, or to establish secrecy regarding his birth. Otherwise, his name would not have appeared in the Hadith of the Tablet [5] that was presented to Fatimah (peace be upon her) by the Prophet (peace be upon him and his family), nor would Imam Hasan al-‘Askari (peace be upon him) have explicitly stated his name when he said to his maidservant: “You will bear a male child whose name will be Muhammad, and he is the Qa’im after me” [6].
Nor would the Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) have said: “His name is my name and his kunyah is my kunyah,” while everyone knows that the Prophet’s name (peace be upon him and his family) is Muhammad.

The Fourth Hadith
Imam al-Ridha (peace be upon him) and the Refutation of Some Narrations
Al-Kashshi reported:
Ali ibn Muhammad ibn Qutaybah narrated to me, saying: Ibn Shadhan narrated to me, saying: Muhammad ibn al-Hasan al-Wasiti and Muhammad ibn Yunus narrated to us, saying: al-Hasan ibn Qiyama al-Sufi said:
“I performed Hajj in the year 193 AH, and I asked Abu al-Hasan al-Ridha (peace be upon him). I said: ‘May I be ransomed for you, what happened to your father?’ He replied: ‘He passed away as his forefathers passed away.’
I said: ‘Then what should I do about a hadith that Ya‘qub ibn Shu‘ayb narrated to me from Abu Basir, that Abu ‘Abd Allah (peace be upon him) said:
If someone comes to you telling you that this son of mine has died, has been shrouded, buried, and that they have shaken their hands of the dust of his grave, do not believe him?’
He said: ‘Abu Basir has lied; this is not how he narrated it. Rather, he said: If someone comes to you regarding the صاحب هذا الأمر (the Master of this Affair).’” [7]
I say: It is possible that this hadith was falsely attributed to Abu Basir, and that it was fabricated in order to confuse people about the death of Imam al-Kazim, claiming that he was the Qa’im al-Mahdi and that he would return. Imam al-Ridha (peace be upon him) therefore declared them liars and corrected the report, as you have read from him.
