The Forty Hadiths from Imam al-Ridā concerning Imam al-Mahdi (peace be upon them) – 4
The Sixth Hadith
That al-Mahdi is among those vested with authority (Uli al-Amr) in the verse
It is narrated from Abān that he entered upon ʿAlī ibn Abī al-Ḥasan al-Ridā (peace be upon him) and said: I asked him about the saying of Allah, the Exalted:
“O you who believe! Obey Allah, and obey the Messenger, and those vested with authority among you.”
He said: “That is ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib (peace be upon him).” Then he remained silent.
When his silence lengthened, I said: “Then who?”
He said: “Then al-Ḥasan.” Then he remained silent.
When his silence lengthened, I said: “Then who?”
He said: “Al-Ḥusayn.”
I said: “Then who?”
He said: “ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥusayn,” and he remained silent.
He continued to remain silent at the mention of each one until I repeated the question, and he would respond, until he named them all, up to the last of them (peace be upon them). [9]

The Seventh Hadith
That the earth is never devoid of Allah’s proof
It is narrated from Ibrāhīm ibn Abī Maḥmūd that Imam al-Ridā (peace be upon him) said:
“We are the proofs of Allah over His creation, His vicegerents among His servants, and the trustees of His secret. We are the word of piety and the firmest handhold. We are Allah’s witnesses and His standards among His creatures. Through us Allah holds the heavens and the earth lest they cease, and through us He sends down rain and spreads mercy. The earth is never devoid of one from among us who stands (as Allah’s proof), whether manifest or concealed. Were it to be without a proof even for a single day, it would surge with its inhabitants as the sea surges with its people.”
