A Study Confirms That Memorizing the Quran Protects from Illnesses
A new Islamic study confirms that mental health is linked to the extent of memorizing the Quran, and this is indeed evident in those who memorize the Book of Allah.
The International Quran News Agency (IQNA) reported that the study, conducted by Dr. Saleh bin Ibrahim Al-Sunaei, Professor of Psychology at Imam Muhammad bin Saud Islamic University in Riyadh, found that the more Quran verses one memorizes, the higher their mental health levels. The study sample included two groups: one from King Abdulaziz University in Jeddah with 170 male and female students, and another from the Imam Al-Shatibi Institute for Quranic Studies, affiliated with the Quran Memorization Charity Association in Jeddah, also with 170 students.
The researcher defined mental health as the state in which an individual achieves psychological harmony across four main dimensions: the religious or spiritual dimension, the psychological dimension, the social dimension, and the physical dimension. To measure this, the researcher used a mental health scale developed by Suleiman Al-Dweirat, consisting of 60 statements, and it achieved good reliability.
The study found a positive relationship between the amount of Quran memorization and mental health levels. Students who memorized more had higher mental health levels compared to their peers, with clear differences in results.
There are over 70 foreign and Islamic studies that confirm the importance of religion in improving a person’s mental health and stability, ensuring inner peace. Studies conducted in Saudi Arabia have also shown the Quran’s role in developing basic skills among elementary school students and its positive impact on university students’ academic performance.
The study clarified the relationship between religiosity, particularly Quran memorization, and its effects on mental health, as well as how it enhances individuals’ personalities. Those who memorize the Quran tend to enjoy a high level of mental health, distancing themselves from signs of psychological distress compared to individuals who do not adhere to religious teachings or who memorize only a few short verses.
The study recommended that institutions of higher education encourage students to memorize the entire Quran, given the positive impact this has on many aspects of their lives and academic achievement. It also emphasized the importance of teachers helping their students increase their Quran memorization, even beyond the standard curriculum, as it positively affects their academic performance and mental health.
