### The Prophet’s Advice to the Husband of al-Batoul: “O Ali, Maintaining Kinship Ties Extends One’s Life”

**(101)**
“O Ali, maintaining kinship ties (Silat al-Rahm) extends one’s life.” *(290)*

“…The charity of the tongue. It was asked: ‘O Messenger of God, what is the charity of the tongue?’ He replied: ‘It is intercession through which you free a captive, protect blood (prevent bloodshed), bring goodness to your brother, and avert harm…'”

**C. The Charity of Opinion:** This is seeking consultation (counsel). The Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) said: “Give charity to your brother by knowledge that guides him and an opinion that puts him on the right path.”

**D. The Charity of Mediation:** Mediating between people and working towards extinguishing conflict and reconciling differences.

**E. The Charity of Knowledge:** This is offering it to those who seek it and spreading it to those who deserve it. The Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) said: “Among the forms of charity is to learn knowledge and teach it to the people.” Imam al-Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: “Everything has a Zakat (purification), and the Zakat of knowledge is to teach it to its people.” *(1)*

*(290)* In a Hadith, the Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his family) said: “A man may maintain his kinship ties while only three years remain of his life, and God—the Almighty and Exalted—extends it to thirty years. And he may sever his ties while thirty years remain of his life, and God reduces it to three years.” *(2)*

Many other excellent effects have been reported regarding this, as can be observed in the noble traditions. *(3)*

Among the excellent effects of maintaining kinship ties that can be derived from these texts are: it brings about abundance of wealth, an increase in sustenance (Rizq), the love of one’s family, the prosperity of one’s home, the easing of the reckoning (on the Day of Judgment), protection from a bad death, the purification of deeds, the warding off of calamity, the improvement of character, the generosity of the hand, and the contentment of the soul.
