Indeed, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) used to eat on the ground, sit as a servant sits, mend his own sandals with his hand, patch his own garment with his hand, ride an unsaddled donkey, and have someone ride behind him. If there was a curtain at the door of his house containing images, he would say, “O so-and-so” — to one of his wives — “hide it from me, for whenever I look at it I remember this world and its adornments.”
Thus, he turned away from the world with his heart, erased its remembrance from his soul, and loved that its ornament should be hidden from his sight, so that he would not take from it luxurious finery,¹ nor regard it as a place of permanence, nor hope to remain in it. So he expelled it from the soul, removed it from the heart, and hid it from the eye. In this way, whoever hates a thing hates even to look at it or hear it mentioned in his presence.
Indeed, in the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) there is that which shows you the evils and defects of this world: he went hungry in it along with his close ones, and its adornments were withheld from him despite his immense closeness to Allah. So let the observer consider with his intellect: did Allah honor Muhammad by this, or did He humiliate him? If he says, “He humiliated him,” then by Allah the Mighty, he has lied and uttered a monstrous falsehood. But if he says, “He honored him,” then let him know that Allah humiliated others when He spread the world out for them and kept it away from the one nearest to Him.
So let whoever wishes to follow, follow his Prophet; let him trace his footsteps and enter by his path. Otherwise, he cannot feel safe from destruction. For Allah made Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) a sign of the Hour, a bearer of glad tidings of Paradise, and a warner of punishment. He departed from this world hungry, and came to the Hereafter sound and whole. He did not place one stone upon another until he went on his way and answered the call of his Lord.
How great, then, is Allah’s favor upon us in having bestowed him upon us as a predecessor for us to follow and a leader whose footsteps we tread.
By Allah, I have patched this cloak of mine so many times that I have grown ashamed before the one who patches it. Someone said to me, “Why do you not throw it away?” I replied, “Go away from me, for in the morning the people praise those who traveled by night.”
This sermon is sufficient for our purpose in a general way. We shall now mention in detail the noble traits of his character (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) in all his states and conduct: in his sitting and standing, his travel and residence, his eating and drinking in particular, and all that has been narrated from him and from the truthful Imams (peace be upon them) regarding the conditions of people in general. And we ask Allah for success in completing it. Indeed, He has power over whatever He wills, and making the difficult easy for Him is effortless and simple.
