Hujjat al-Islam Shaikh Murtadha Tehrani, representative of the people of Tehran in the Islamic Consultative Assembly, gave a speech last night in Fatimiyyeh Mosque in which he advised the importance of self-refinement in political activism.
He started off by speaking about the people who helped Prophet Moses (s) topple the Pharoah and then how they betrayed him due to their lack of faith, and through this, he reasoned the possibility of anyone betraying the truth. He deduced: “It is possible that someone stands up against one invalid system and after defeating it, they become the slaves of another invalid system.”
Hujjat al-Islam Shaikh Tehrani recalled how at first the MKO helped in the Islamic revolution and then later betrayed the people of Iran due to their own desires. He expanded more on the evils of greed by giving another example from more recent Iranian political history: “Both Karoubi and Musawi held positions in the government and were a part of the struggle for the revolution, however, due to their desires and greed for power they ended up helping the enemy and therefore ended up betraying this country and its people.”
Looking back at Islamic history as a source of our guidance, the respected scholar stated:
“It was people who fought on the side of the Prophet of Islam (s) and were a part of the soldiers of Islam that ended up betraying the successor of the Prophet (s). They became the cause of irreparable damages to the very religion that they had fought for, for many years.”
Trying to better understand the causes of such attitudes, Hujjat al-Islam Shaikh Tehrani explained: “There are some people who in times of necessity, and times of trouble, become humble and submissive in front of God and in front of those who they depend on. After their problems have been taken care off they become rebellious and this course of action will lead to their destruction.”
In conclusion, Hujjat al-Islam Shaikh Murtadha Tehrani looked at the importance of self-refinement and knowledge when it comes to effecting change in society. He said: “When people who have not been refined or have not worked on their intellect gain power and blessings, they exploit those powers and blessings and as a result not only do they cause irreversible harm to the society around them, but they also cause harm to themselves.”
