Ayatollah Jawadi Amoli, in his last jurisprudence class of the Iranian year, spoke about the importance of gaining depth in the understanding of our supplications. He said: “The Prophet (s) has advised that there are some supplications which should be said a lot. One of these is the phrase الهی لاتکلنی الی نفسی طرفه عین ابدا, and another is the supplication یا مقلب القلوب ثبت قلبی علی دینک.”
His eminence explained the importance of being in control of our self and the importance of Islam being the guide in our life. He said: “All the difficulties we face are due to selfishness and pride. Our soul has a commander that directs us towards negativity. Destroying this commander and replacing it with a good commander requires one to struggle with their whole existence. This is a type of war which requires us to get rid of the hegemonic power and replace it with an Islamic system.”
He continued: “We are trapped by an internal dominating system however we desire to have something that is commanded by beauty and that is our intellect and true nature. To get rid of this negative guide and to replace it with intellect and true nature requires us to struggle, which is not an easy task. This is why we should recite the supplication <الهی لاتکلنی الی نفسی…> in every situation.”
Ayatollah Jawadi discussed the importance of not only recognizing Satan as the enemy but also recognizing that there is no other enemy like him. He said: “Satan rides upon a person till the end of their life and it can be said that he is the negative embodiment of the phrase ‘there is nothing like him’ (لیس کمثله شیء). In the commentary of the phrase اعدا عدوک نفسک it has been stated that if you throw a piece of meat in front of an attacking dog, just by eating that piece of meat he will leave you alone, however, Satan is not like this.”
Explaining further the true meanings of our supplication, the highly respected scholar stated: “When we say یا مقلب القلوب و الابصار, this asking requires certain tools and materials that God has introduced to us. God has stated that we made your foundations out of purity and chastity however you are the cause for its disruption and now if you wish for me to recreate them then it requires you to gather the tools and materials for the reconstruction and they are repentance, worship, service to the people etc.”
Ayatollah Jawadi Amoli finished his discussion by giving examples to make us understand what it is that we are actually asking for in our supplications. He concluded: “We do not see a lot of people around us who are without hands or feet however, God states that there are very few people with hands and feet. This is because hands which are not capable of serving God, creating knowledge and helping others are not hands at all. God states that Ibrahim (a) has hands because those hands which do not take the axe and do not destroy the idols are not hands at all. He states that Ibrahim (a) has eyes as he reached the unity of God through them. He praised Ibrahim (a) as having the best hands and the best vision and these are the parts and the states that we desire from God.”
