arrogance-In the presence of the martyred leader1

## In the Name of God, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful

## Introduction

The Islamic world is suffering from attempts to dominate its wealth and its political decision-making, and in many cases, this may even extend to attempts at military occupation.

Imam Khomeini, may his soul be sanctified, coined the term **“Global Arrogance”** to refer to the parties that carry out such attempts.

So, what is this arrogance? What are its objectives? And what methods does it adopt in controlling the Islamic world?

These questions, among others, are what we will attempt to answer in this booklet, guided throughout by the directives provided by His Eminence, the Guardian of the Muslims, Imam Khamenei, may his shadow endure. In doing so, we will draw upon his Friday prayer sermons and his meetings.

We ask God Almighty to make us, in confronting the arrogant, like a solid structure, firmly joined together, and among those who hold fast to the ولاية (Guardianship), seeking nearness to God Almighty by walking under its shade and according to its path. Indeed, He is the Hearer of supplication, near in answering.

## What is Arrogance?

**Arrogance** is a word derived from **takabbur**, meaning haughtiness or exalting oneself above others. Arrogance is not a new phenomenon that appeared only in our time; rather, it is as old as history itself. God Almighty mentioned examples of the arrogant in the Holy Qur’an, such as Pharaoh. Exalted is He, who said:

> *“Then after them We sent Moses and Aaron to Pharaoh and his chiefs with Our signs, but they behaved arrogantly and were a criminal people. So when the truth came to them from Us, they said, ‘Indeed, this is clear magic.’ Moses said, ‘Do you say this about the truth when it has come to you? Is this magic? But magicians will not succeed.’ They said, ‘Have you come to turn us away from what we found our fathers following, so that greatness in the land may belong to you two? And we are not going to believe in you.’”*
> **(Surah Yunus, verses 75–78)**

Arrogance in a human being is one of the blameworthy moral traits that scholars of ethics have listed among the qualities destructive to religion, based on the warnings found in the narrations. It is reported from Imam al-Baqir, peace be upon him:

> *“Honor is the cloak of God, and الكبرياء (majesty/pride) is His garment. Whoever lays claim to any part of them, God will cast him into Hell.”*

In another narration from Abu Ja‘far and Abu ‘Abdillah, peace be upon them, they said:

> *“No one who has even the weight of a ذرّة (an atom’s weight) of arrogance in his heart shall enter Paradise.”*

He, may his shadow endure, says:

> *“Among the greatest responsibilities of a person, wherever he may be, is to know his legal limits and not transgress them. Transgressing limits is nothing but despotism and arrogance, both of which carry an ugly and disgraceful meaning. The greatest danger threatening a human being is that despotism and arrogance may take hold of him, and this is an affliction that may befall everyone as well.”*

In this age, this term has come to be used for arrogant states that seek to dominate the world.

Imam Khamenei, may his shadow endure, says:

> *“Global arrogance includes all the overbearing and tyrannical powers in the world, and all the shameless faces that dominate nations.”*
