Ayatollah Sayyid Bushehri, at the 5th annual commemoration of the passing away of Ayatollah Behjat, spoke about the true value of man, the importance of the intellect, the objective of the Prophets (s) and ultimately the true value of scholars.
He stated: “Man has a lofty position in creation; to the extent that God has introduced him as the vicegerent of Allah (khalifat-Allah) and venerated him in the Quran.”
“Man is a creation that can gain closer proximity to God than even the angels.”
The Ayatollah explained the importance of realizing the potential within man and the danger of negligence towards his true value, he said: “A person has a responsibility to find and strengthen this potential that lies within him. However, alongside these potentials, a person also has desires within him which, if left un-checked, can drag him to a level lower than that of even the animals.”
The head of the Islamic seminaries in Qum extrapolated from his knowledge 3 factors which help man achieve lofty status. He explained: “The primary factor in this field is the intellect of the human. God has placed a luminous torch, namely, the intellect in the hands of a person which is used to show the right path to travel in all the different fields.”
Introducing the Prophets (s) as the second factor in this discussion, his eminence stated: “The Prophets had a connection with God and through this they received divine commands and these teachings were presented by them to the people in a comprehensible manner.”
Ayatollah Sayyid Bushehri built upon his argument and presented scholars as the third factor that would lead man to his success: “They exhaust all their energy for the guidance of mankind so that the path to salvation is not lost.”
“The religious scholars hold a lofty position in the Quran and the traditions of the Ma’sumeen (a) where they have been venerated and appreciated.”
Stressing the importance of the scholars, the Ayatollah highlighted a tradition of the Prophet (s). He stated: “According to the tradition of the Holy Prophet (s), the scholars are like the gleaming stars which are used by those traveling by sea or on land so that their path is not lost.”
Emphasizing this point further, the highly respected authority in religion quoted a narration from Imam Baqir (a). He said: “According to a narration from Imam Baqir (a), a scholar can be followed with certainty if they benefit the society, they practice what they preach and they worship sincerely.”
“According to the traditions of our Ma’sumim (s), a person should not go to whichever scholar they please. They should go to a scholar that guides people from doubt to certainty, from arrogance to humility, from duplicity to sincerity, from animosity and hatred to love and friendship and from love of this world to piety and asceticism. “
The Ayatollah further emphasized the importance of having the right company by recalling a tradition from Prophet Isa (a). He narrated: “In the words of this divine Prophet, a person must keep company with someone whose sight takes them to the remembrance of God, leads to the progress of their knowledge or their actions lead a person to remember the afterlife. This way of living is Islamic and attention must be paid towards it.”
At the end of his talk, Ayatollah Sayyid Bushehri finished my introducing Ayatollah Behjat as being one of the scholars who fulfilled the conditions that need to be found in a good scholar and someone who would fulfills those conditions which can be found in good company. He said: “One of the qualities of this pious scholar was the level of his knowledge. From the age of 14 years he went to Karbala and gained his knowledge from highly esteemed scholars. To continue his studies he came to Qum and became a student of Ayatollah Burujerdi.”
He concluded: “Before he had reached adolescence, he had begun his journey in servitude of God and this was the reason that he was able to achieve lofty stations of mysticism at an early age.”
