Ayatollah Misbah Yazdi, in his final lesson of ethics for the year, spoke about the life we live in and its relation to the hereafter.
His eminence stated: “When the question is raised of how it is possible to lengthen one’s life, God answers by stating the lengthening of life for a person is possible by the individual striving towards making the life of this world insignificant and valueless, and, in contrast to this, the life of the hereafter valuable.”
He mentioned longing for an eternal life as an innate desire. He said: “Man has been created in such a way that he pursues his pleasures; therefore, it is not a weakness to wish for a long life.”
The highly respected scholar stated: “No one can claim that they are not in the pursuit of any type of pleasure, if such a claimant is found, know that there is something wrong with them. In the pursuit for super natural powers, the Indian ascetics go through a lot of suffering but even that is because they are after the pleasure found in the result.”
Explaining the verse ‘…each one of them wishes He could be given a life of a thousand years: But the grant of such life will not save him from (due) punishment.’ (Surah Baqarah: 96), the respected commentator of the Quran said: “The reason why desiring a long life is frowned upon in the Quran is because some people do not understand that life in this world is like a small toy, and by entertaining themselves in this world, they become oblivious to the real life.”
“Answering the polytheists who desired a life of a thousand years, God stated that even if you reach such an age, you would still not be free from the divine punishment.”
Quoting the verse: ‘Say, “O you who are Jews, if you claim that you are allies of Allah, excluding the [other] people, then wish for death, if you should be truthful.”’ (Surah Jum’a: 6), his eminence said: “In this verse God addresses the Jews and states that if you speak the truth about being the lovers of God, then desire death. The Quran does not state: become a lover of death and commit suicide, rather, it says perfection is in this that you understand true life and know that: ‘this worldly life is not but diversion and amusement. And indeed, the home of the Hereafter – that is the [eternal] life…’ (Surah Ankabut: 64)”
