The artificial intelligence market is witnessing a dramatic shift at the beginning of 2026, as the dominance once enjoyed by the “ChatGPT” app has begun to recede in the face of a strong rise by competitors. According to data from Apptopia, ChatGPT’s market share fell from 69.1% in January 2025 to 45.3% in 2026, signaling that the market has entered a new phase of shared dominance and intensified competition.
In contrast, Google’s “Gemini” app achieved a qualitative leap during the same period, increasing its market share from 14.7% to 25.2%. Likewise, Elon Musk’s “Grok” app recorded remarkable growth, reaching 15.2% of the market compared to just about 1.6% during the same period last year. In the enterprise sector, Anthropic has established notable dominance by capturing nearly one-third of the market, outperforming OpenAI, whose share declined to 25%, and Google, which stabilized at around 20%.
Despite these competitive pressures, financial reports indicate that OpenAI is moving forward with plans for a potential initial public offering (IPO) in the final quarter of the current year. The company has taken decisive steps to prepare its financial environment, including transitioning to a “public benefit corporation” model to attract institutional investors, and recruiting executive leadership from major technology companies to strengthen financial compliance. It appears that the competition is no longer limited to the number of individual users alone, but has shifted toward the quality of enterprise-focused services and the ability to generate sustainable returns to secure leadership in this new technological era.
